I booked a room through Airbnb a week ago and then found I had to have emergency treatment. I notified them giving a month's notice and they declined to reimburse my $256 deposit. I can't recommend doing business with someone who thinks so very little of potential customers. Plans change, accidents happen and with these hosts it doesn't really matter. I understand they are trying to run a business, but this is not a solid business practice for future guests.
OMG worse Air B&B I have ever stayed at. Place is a junk yard and looks like something out of a horror movie. Claimed to have clean sheets but it was not as advertised. I booked my daughter and I plus our dog and he said no dogs allowed but the website said it was pet-friendly . The pictures looked great online but it is atrocious. Avoid this property at all costs. Newport is beautiful but this place is a dump and doesn't fit the historic community.
My wife and I stayed here last year two nights for the Newport Jazz festival. We had a nice time and enjoyed the rooms, the location and the host. The place is a bit quirky and has lots of furniture etc. It is not the Marriott. We have stayed at the Newport Marriott, which is a very nice hotel at about $650 per night. If you are open to a bit more of a bohemian experience, you will enjoy the Poplar house. The front door was left open and the host is usually nearby. And, no-one paid me to write this.
The Poplar House Inn is well located to enjoy Newport on foot. Walter, our host, is extremely service oriented and regularly checked on what we needed and satisfied promptly any of our requests. He was a wealth of knowledge, and his recommendations contributed to a great New Year’s experience as did the homeyness of the Inn. We felt right at home and well cared for at the Poplar House. The two bedrooms were comfortable with high quality bedding, pillows and linens. The bathroom was large and clean. The kitchen was well stocked and made it easy to enjoy a self-service bagel breakfast. The living area was cozy. Besides the location and service, if you like people you will enjoy getting to know Walter. We look forward to a return visit.
My Wife and I found the Poplar House through the fine recommendation of one our New England friends. The host, Walter, is well organized & helpful. The location is awesome, and Walter can help you find the very best of Newport to enjoy with your time there. It is a historical house that is very comfortable, and in a quiet place that allows for a good night of sleep. And the value here is incredible! Newport is incredible, but not at a cheap place to visit. The Polar House can much help with your traveling budget.
We have been staying with Walter for the last 3 years while in Newport on business. True, it is not luxurious and a bit crowded but it is clean, conveniently located and comfortable. More important Walter is a wonderful host. He's helpful, anxious to please and will go out of his way to supply guests with whatever they might need. Breakfast is cereal, bagels, or toast. Yogurt is in the refrigerator along with drinks and milk for coffee. See you next year!!
It's true this place isn't for everybody, but I take issue with those who call it filthy. It simply isn't. The entrance hall carpet has seen its share of winter salt and probably should be replaced, but it's clean inside. Walter is a very hospitable man who simply has too much stuff. Visitors appreciate horizontal surfaces in their rooms where they can put things down. A bit of re-arranging, and turning off the ubiquitous radio music, and you're all set. Comfortable beds, the price is right, and you'll have a stay with character to remember for the right price in an expensive town.
After a mix-up with a reservation at a high-end boutique hotel left us stranded for the evening at about midnight. We were sent to the Poplar House by the other hotel as their back up. From the moment we pulled down the dark alley and were greeted by the manager who had us pull our car into a junk filled spot in front of a run down garage we knew something wasn't right. We were shown our room, up a narrow staircase filled with knickknacks, there was a kitchen on the 2nd floor that was not eat in ready. The shared bathroom was dirty and the bedroom left much to be desired. Tired and frustrated we never even sat down. The manager had asked us to "keep the front door open" just in case someone else showed up. It's not normal for guests to just pop in, during the middle of the night, right? There were no other guests there. We didn't feel safe or comfortable staying there and took off to search for somewhere else to stay for the evening. Run away, this place shouldn't be in business unless that business might have something to do with the creepy red lights in a small room off the main floor.
