This is a cool 50's style kind of a travel lodge. Definitely has a retro vibe. The place was very clean, and quiet. We stayed late in the season, so there was very few other people. I only saw one young lady who work there, and she was exceptionally nice. Her name was Stacy, and was very helpful in trying to find out how she could make things more comfortable for us. She wasn't going to be in the office the following morning, but still took care of us as far as clean towels and a set up for fresh coffee in the morning. We woke up in the morning, to a flock of wild turkeys on the property. The bed was comfortable, and we would highly recommend this place. We will definitely be staying here again!

I cannot recall the last time we stayed in a motel, but when we needed a place for only three nights and we wanted to be in Douglas, The Pines popped up in my search. I am so glad it did. Our stay was delightful in this updated lodging. The king bed and pillows were comfortable, there was ample storage allowing us to completely unpack, good reading lights, a small but adequate bathroom, and comfortable sitting areas both inside and outside our room and around a nearby fire ring.||Our host offered coffee each morning and we were able to stash drinks and snacks in the room fridge.||We really enjoyed our stay and it will be our first choice any time we're in the area for shorter visits.

I was notified well before my arrival date that check-in was between 3pm-5pm. About 2:30pm, on the day of arrival, I received a text from the owner that he was running late due to a community meeting. I was assured that my room was ready, how to operate the thermostat and TV remote. Right then, I knew I has picked the right place. The owners and staff were exceptionally friendly and responsive to any need. Our room, and the property, were meticulously well maintained. The Pines is not a large resort, its a quaint place for downtime while visiting the area, which is exactly what we were looking for. The owners made us feel like we were staying at a friends home. We want to thank you both for making us feel right at home. Lance and Goldie

It was very clean and neat. We were impressed with the grounds as well. It is not a modern hotel but we loved it!! Took us back in had everything that you need. The owner was gracious enough to tell us about a restaurant with live music and we enjoyed that immensely. Thanks to him we were able to have a wonderful evening as it was raining outside and it not alot to do in Saugatuck or Douglas that night. We would definitely stay there again and have told all our friends all about it.

We have stayed her several times. It's such a cute place. Very clean with cute decor. There is a lovely outdoor area in the middle of the property for lounging if you want. There are pretty flowers and each unit has Adirondack chairs right outside. The owners are very nice and welcoming. Everything you need is right here in this cute little motor lodge. We stop here on our way up to northern Michigan once or twice a year-it's about the halfway point from where we live to the Charlevoix/Petoskey area. It's a great location. You can walk to both Saugatuck and Douglas from the motor lodge-although it's a bit of a hike to Saugatuck. We love both towns-Douglas is small and quaint with some nice restaurants and galleries. Saugatuck is larger and on the Kalamazoo River and has lots to do.

Basic barely describes The Pines. Even Red Roof Inns have coffee makers inside the rooms. Even Super 8s have sheets that actually fit the beds and don't just tangle up around at you night. And even Motel 6s have housekeeping - that's right, they don't make your beds here. "Continental breakfast" is a selection of three bite-sized breads. And the towels. Dear God the towels. I've seen more luxurious rags at AutoZone. If this were a $75/night motel I would be happy. If it were a $125/night hotel in a city I would shrug my shoulders. But this is more than $200/night. And if there were warmth and charisma from the owner I might be convinced, but even just checking-in seemed to be an inconvenience for him; perhaps the season has taken its toll. There are much better options in the Saugatuck/Douglas area, save your money until they make some significant upgrades.

We make a point of stopping in Saugatuck/Douglas on our way to Northern Michigan. We ALWAYS stay at The Pines. Besides being owned and operated by the finest folks you could ever hope to meet - the Pines is an easy walk to some wonderful dinig optons in Douglas. It is great to stretch your legs after a long day in the car and enjoy a really nice meal. |The atmosphere at The Pines is congenial and peaceful. The rooms are great and the bedding guarantees a great nights sleep. |

So glad I found this place when looking on-line for somewhere to stay in the Saugatuck-Douglas area! We booked it last minute, and then our plans changed the day before we were set to arrive. But since there are no cancellations/refunds, we decided to still go so we wouldn't be out the money. Very glad we did because it's just the cutest, coziest place. The special touches are great, including classic music playing softly outside (it turns off at night), ice and corkscrews left outside for your convenience, the patio area to sit and have a drink before dinner, read a book, or just relax and the retro fridge and microwave in the rooms. With Saugatuck just a 5 minute drive away, it was a great location. We've been coming to the area for over 25 years and will be sure to stay here the next time we are there! And thank you to Steve for changing our room to the King bed since it became available after we booked the 2 double bed room :)

What an absolute delight! We couldn’t have been happier with our stays. (Yes multiple!) My wife and I were married here at the Kirby this fall and in the year prior we made multiple trips into town to plan everything and we always stayed here. Chri
