Great addition to Shades State Park. We hiked part of #10 after hiking the hikes at Shades. Turkeybackbone, Mill Cut and The Slide are interesting but Devil's Backbone and Honeycomb Rock are where the action and drama happen! Signage for Devil's Backbone is hidden behind brush so we missed it until after we hiked Honeycomb Rock which proved to be far more risky hiking from that direction. It would have been safer hiking it up from Devil's Backbone trail head.
If you had been to Turkey Run you can skip Shades SP and go directly to Pine Hills. Amazing trail #10 with a few gorgeous spots along the way. From stunning cliffs to tall slides to peaceful creeks... Wonderful place to hike on a weekend.
Most trails are easy to follow. The ones that have you going through Creek beds are a little harder, but definitely worth it. Make sure to wear your grippiest and water proof hiking boots!
This place is amazing the trails can be a little challenging in places, but I highly recommend checking this place out if you have not done so already, shades state park is definitely one of my favorite places, and it's in close proximity to turkey run as well.
I missed this nature preserve on my last visit to Shades, that was a mistake! After a a bit of a walk through flat woodlands less than a mile from flat fields, you suddenly hit some of the most beautiful landscapes in Indiana. Do not pass this place up!
Great place to hike in central IN. You have to enter Shades State Park and then take a right to get to the trail head. The trail is well marked and medium difficulty. There are a few stream crossings so be prepared to have wet feet. If you like plants, there are tons of beautiful forest interior plants. This is a less crowded place to hike than Shades and just as beautiful.
It's a great place for a hike. Be prepared part of the trail can be challenging.
Print off your own map before coming. The entrance to devil's backbone is hidden (especially during fall ). We could not find the face engraved in devil's backbone. It was fun!

Here is another great Indiana State Park. My husband and I went on an overcast, soggy Saturday, and basically had the place to ourselves. We had limited time, so we didn't get to hike every trail. There are shorter trails here, so it wouldn't be diff
We love Lake Waveland. You can drive your vehicle right up to the water. They are picnic tables and fire pits. Now if there was only a magical way to make the fish bite.
