Prepare to be transported to another world. The flora we saw here was unexpected (to us). The biggest surprise was a red moss ground cover spotted with large pitcher plants. Definitely a must see if you are visiting the New London area!
This Kettle Hole Bog is very beautiful and interesting! There are a wide variety of plants that you might never see outside of this context, such as carnivorous pitchers and sundews! There are also wooded sections of trails where you are encouraged to listen for various birds who make their home here. The trails are very easy and reletively short. There are anchored, non-slip walkways in some areas, and sturdy floating wooden boards laid over the bog mat in others. There's a fundraising effort in place to outfit all trails with the non-slip walkways. Stay on the walkways and do not be tempted to step off onto the bog mat. It looks like solid ground, but it is not, and the water under the floating mat can be up to 20 feet deep!
Wow! For a free hike this trail offers so much it really should be a nature center/preserve. The improvements to the trail are awesome. Of course part of the thrill of this trail might be lost without the challenge of staying on boards. Easy trails, very worth the visit
Awesome. Easy walk nice views. No restrooms. Gotta poop in the woods.
Inspired beauty in a bog with well maintained plank walking path. The flowers are still in full bloom and gross can be found in the puddles. A really wonderful place to find peace and calm and surround oneself with the sounds of birds, frogs and wind through trees.
A wonderful experience. The new aluminium walkways are good if you are limited mobility but the original wooden boards have been maintained very well too.
Went on a rainy spring day. Didn’t wear the right shoes, so got my feet wet. Some planks were submerged in water for several inches. Beautiful nonetheless! Lots of pitcher plants, moss, and birds.
Nice short walk (~.7 mile). Well-maintained despite wearntear. NLCC funds the maintenance.
