A really great place! Very informative and tons to see! We’ll worth the admission! We spent about 2.5 hours here.
Honestly an incredible museum. As an archaeologist and historian in California but from PA, I was interested in learning about the similarities and differences between logging in the two regions. The displays are of a quality unexpected for the middle of nowhere, and I was really happy that it was inclusive and didn't only talk about White history. I didn't visit the outdoor displays because I am familiar with much of what was offered, but if you are at all interested in logging history you should check them out. The gift shop is great too, including handcrafted wooden items.
Full disclaimer: I am a volunteer at the lumber museum, but I’ve always loved to visit! It’s an affordable, wholesome place to spend half a day or so, especially if you’re into history. They run 3 special events a year which are a lot of fun. Try to attend those if you want a chance to see demonstrations and big exhibits up and running— like the blacksmith, camp cooks, steam-powered sawmill, and birch oil still.
My husband and I really enjoyed our visit to the Lumber Museum. So much interesting history! As you wonder around the camp and through the buildings, you can imagine how difficult life was back then. Such hard work! The miniature train display is very well done. Take your time to really appreciate all the tiny details. I don't know that small children would like the museum, but if you are interested in Pennsylvania history, old steam engines, and enjoy seeing how lumbering was done a century ago, it's definitely worth a visit! We'd like to come back next July 4th weekend for the Bark Peelers Festival. Sounds like fun!!
If you're into Pennsylvania Forest history then this is a place for you to check out. It was snowy when I visited so some of the buildings were closed dye to weather so I recommend going in spring summer or fall..loved it!
A very informative and interesting museum on the history of the timber industry. An unexpected surprise...great displays.
Very cool museum. History of forestry and all the ways forests were cared for. Something that should be respected would be our PA forests and anywhere else. wildlife and whatnot. Real neat experiences here.
This museum is excellent and far exceeded my expectations. I was surprised by how well designed and curated the exhibits are inside the main exhibit area. There is a TON to see in small space. All the outside exhibits (sawmill, lumber camp, historic cabins) are also fascinating - I will have to return on one of the days that they are running the sawmill, etc. as that would be very interesting to see. I thought the $8 admission price (Regular adult price) was very reasonable considering the quality of the museum and its exhibits.
