Patee house was probably a nice museum, the staff was so rude, we drove 90 minutes to see this, arrived 30 minutes before close, and they advertised 4pm closing, it closes at 3:45pm, you are warned, we needed the restroom when we got there, she said that's for paying customers only, of course we pay at all places we go and donate generously, we love history. Terrible woman and this place in a VERY scary neighborhood, lock your car. It is a well kept museum. We ran through in about 10 after a 5 minute bathroom break.
What a great surprise! We came for the Jesse James House, which was small but fun and informative. Ended going to the Patee House next door and WOW! You could spend days in there! Little bit of everything, would DEFINITELY recommend! Gorgeous working carousel too!
The Patee House Museum is quite a fantastic place. The history they have captured is amazing. You would never believe they have a train station AND a train in here. There is so much to see on the 3 floors of this surprising museum. You need to go out of your way to experience this gem. DO IT !!!
Wonderful museum. Excellent displays, beautifully set up. Wonderful donations of historical items. Worth it.
Excellent museum of the old midwest. Old hotel, original headquarters of the Pony Express. Every display is a collection of different regions historical artifacts. For example, one room is Walter Cronkite's fathers dental office. Walter Cronkite was born in St. Joseph and his grandfather and father were dentists there. They recently opened the 3rd floor so you can see the original hotel rooms. Second time here, did not pay the extra $ to see Jessy James house this time.
My family and I visited while in St. Joseph on an assignment. There is so much history we spent 4hrs and I still didn't get through all of it. The kids had fun with a little game the museum does where they have to find what is wrong with the displays. I will be visiting again while I am here because there is so much!
Well worth the $8 per person for my wife and I. We spent over 2 hours walking around and reading the many, many exhibits. We just came to St. Joseph for a little getaway for a couple of day, and I am so glad we chose to go through this museum. It gives you a great feel for the history of the whole town and area not just the building. Also some great western history in general.
Also, it is really well kept up. Kudos to the association. It is in a part of town (we walked all through downtown) that is fairly run down, but the museum is fantastically well kept.
We wanted to visit the Patee House. When we entered we were told: Sorry, we'll be closing IN 15 MINUTES! Well, then I wanted at least watch one or the other in a quick run while my wife sat down on the "horn couch" and waited for me. So I only wanted to pay one entrance fee, but the lady at the register took $14 from my VISA card for two people. I was back in 14.5 minutes only to be told I had half an hour left! ?!?!?
