I love this trail! Its part of my fair weather exercise routine and its a magical place. The best Summer lighting is from sunup to about 11 am and again from 3pm to sundown. There are lots of grand vistas to experience but be watchful of all the tree roots crossing the trail. Pack it in and out. No fees to park!
Please read this whole review! I must begin by saying this trail is gorgeous-it somehow looks more rainforest-y than the Hoh or Queets! The variety of ferns on this trail is so cool, and in early July, there are still a few tiny wildflowers here and there to be spotted. There are some nice river views along the way, and I consider this trail to be a 'must hike/walk' trail in this area!! There are two Old Sauk Trailheads and I parked at the first one you come upon traveling up Mountain Loop Highway on the Darrington side. The trail has lots of flat sections and a few very slight, short mini hills ( if you'd even refer to the minor inclines as such)up some natural tree root 'stairs'. It is a family friendly trail, and the other trailhead has an ADA section. What I want to warn folks about is the car break ins here at this first trailhead. We stopped at this same trailhead to tailgate lunch last summer and there was broken window glass everywhere then. When I was there the first weekend of July 2023, same thing. I assume valuables are what the prowler's goal is, and I am not sure what can be done about this unfortunate situation. All I can recommend is EMPTY your vehicles of anything of even remote worth before heading here, or keep anything valuable with you in a backpack as you walk. Arm your security system if you have one, and I don't know much about dashcams, but if you have one and it is able to record while you are away from the vehicle, DO IT!! Do anything you can think of to safeguard your car here. I would think a fancier vehicle might attract more attention, so keep that in mind, but I don't know if that matters from the amount and different types of glass I've seen here. They must work VERY fast, and very quietly in broad daylight. I wish this activity here could be stopped, but it would likely require resources beyond what both the Rangers and Sheriff are able to commit to this situation. I hope this doesn't turn you off from visiting here-it is seriously like an enchanted forest back there..just be aware that you will be better off leaving valuables at home securing your vehicle as much as one can!
One thing to note about the Old Sauk River Trail is the presence of downed trees along the path. These fallen giants may require some careful maneuvering or detours, adding an element of adventure to the hike. While they can be a minor inconvenience, they also serve as a reminder of the ever-changing nature of the wilderness. Despite the fallen trees, the highlight of this trail is undoubtedly the breathtaking view of the Sauk River. The trail is a rewarding hiking experience despite the presence of downed trees. The magnificent views of the river, the peaceful atmosphere, and the abundance of natural beauty make it a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Great hike, lots of mushrooms, beautiful fog and rushing river sounds
Absolutely awesome trail with lots of river spots to explore! It’s also a very easy trail, well marked, and would be great for kids. The Mexican restaurant in Darrington is pretty great too if you need lunch after!
This is a pleasant walk through an old-growth forest. Lots of moss, lichen, trees of various types. The ADA trail is a smooth, mostly flat gravel trail, with occasional turnouts and a river overlook. It is a peaceful, pretty trail well worth the time. There are no spectacular vistas, but kind of like the comfort food of trails. There are a few offshoot trails that are well with the time as well. They are not difficult, but certainly not ADA. They offer a more intimate forest experience with more views of the river and a stream. I know this trail gets traffic, but on a Friday my small group did not see any other people. If you do most of the ADA loop, but also the offshoot trails, it will be about a 7-mile hike.
Super cool trail, reminded me of parts of the Hoh Rainforest, as it was so mossy and picturesque. Cute little trail, not busy on a weekday afternoon, and easy enough for my kiddos to navigate, and dogs allowed on leash.
A great hike for those looking to take a break from elevation change. Beautiful views of the Sauk river with a number of places to access the water. Bring a plant identification manual in the spring and learn about some of the amazing flowers and ferns growing along the trail.
