Very nice area. Unfortunately when we were there the Fort was closed up. There is an amazing Osage orange tree there that's huge. The pioneer graveyard was interesting to walk through. This area is rich with history.
Outside the park, on the left as you enter, is one of the oldest, collosal Ossage Orange Tree's in the United States. The age of the tree is estimated between 250 - 300 years old. Who or how it was planted is a mystery. I would love to review Fort Harrod but at the time I was here, it was closing.
We saw the Battle of Fort Harrod with the grandkids! A must-see outdoor reenactment of early American expansion. It was well done, the real-life action, with community actors, with up close seating to the outdoor stage, and extremely loud in your face reality! We loved it, and even our grandkids enjoyed it immensely. There is food and refreshments on site along with various souvenirs to purchase.
Went to t Fort Harrod for the Halloween special event called The Sleepy Hollow Experience put on by Brian Clowdus Experiences. #BCESleepyHollow . Mind-blowing entertainment! The show was an excellent mix of both scary and humor. The actors and actresses were phenomenal their ability to keep you entertained and enthralled throughout the show. They are all extremely talented in the portrayal of their characters, have excellent singing voices and knock it out of the park instrumental talent.
Sadly we got here late but even in the time we arrived with little time we enjoyed the fort. There is the fort, museum, the old tree, cemetery, a gift shop and I think a church to see. We will come back again because we didn't get to see one building but we got to see the cemetery and everything inside the fort. I loved how helpful everyone is and patient answering our questions. Hopefully next year we can make it to the reenactment in June every year. It's always humbling to see how far we have come and how blessed we really are. We are our forefathers dreams realized and so much more.
I really came here to see the Osage Orange Tree, but found much more. Old Fort Harrod is a celebration of America's expansion West. There is much made about developing this land, with little to no mention of the cost and to who. It feels weird visiting from California where we don't have as long of history, but we have a similar story. There is a place to teach about the costs, while still preserving the past and celebrating the spirit that was the flame that started what we know today.
On another note, be sure to know the Fort is closed on Monday and Tuesday. The park is expertly done and taken care of, and is worth your visit.
Very nice historical place to visit! We had a picnic lunch near the nations largest Osage tree. In the Fort we had a self guided tour and we were able to spend as much time as we wanted to look at the mementos and articles of colonial life, and listen to the recordings about the people who lived in those times. There are also knowledgable people wearing clothing of that period who answers questions and are very informative. The Mansion Museum was very interesting with artifacts in connection with Lincoln, Davis, Stanton, Boone, Confederacy, Union, etc. as well as memorabilia of Taylor and his descendants who lived there nearly 100 years.
Amazing place if you love history and learning about the founding of this country. The reenactments close during the winter season, but it is still fun nevertheless. Staff were friendly and bathrooms were well kept and clean. Truly a historic monument and tribute to the pioneers who built our nation.
