My girlfriend and I stopped in on our trip to Sioux Falls to see some of the historic pieces and check the place out. We really enjoyed ourselves. There are some really cool pieces and artifacts throughout the building. It's also completely free of charge. Donations are accepted and encouraged, though.
The Old Courthouse Museum is a gem of the Sioux Falls Heritage Museum offerings (see also the Pettigrew Home). Large, ornate with a hint of mystery, exhibits are tucked in to rooms begging to be explored. Walk up the black stairs between the naturalistic murals depicting the local Sioux Falls for beautiful rooms, walls and ceilings. A favorite piece was an authentic copy of the Peace and Friendship Treaty from 1815 (!!!) lovely gift shop with a unique focus on South Dakota and Little House on the Prairie. Free admission and the air conditioning is nice and cooling on a hot summer day.
This was a pleasant surprise. We visit a lot of local museums and this one didn't disappoint. The first floor had some great historical information, some of it novelty stuff like makeup and beauty history. The second floor was the beautiful courtrooms and a nice American flag display and the third floor is the balcony over the courthouse. A lot of information for a small proce of FREE.
I have a little history with the Old Courthouse Museum as we had our wedding reception there several years ago. It is a stunning venue and the staff was so great to work with. If you are looking for a wedding or reception venue, I would recommend checking it out. Well worth it! Today we went back through just because we like the building. We parked in the side lot near the back courtyard. They have so many exhibits there but walking through the building itself is always a great experience! Side note* to the gal in the gift shop working your first day, you did great! Thank you for your help!
A fantastic way to learn about the local history. Who would know there was a nuclear reactor in the region that only operated for one year before decommission? It is hard to imagine how the life of a person entrusted with the duty of climbing hundreds of stairs to wind the clock was in the old days. The visit was a lot more educational than we could have ever expected. Native Americans stalked preys before the re-introduction of horses by Europeans. They were also innovative by luring bison into natural sinkholes, but ambushing eagles is something we can never think of. Among the museum collection, I find the antique automobile and loom the most intriguing. Needless to say, the courthouse room was beautifully restored.
Wonderful place to visit! A three story building with collections, conference halls, etc. very good architecture… very nice collections, especially with the makeup and hairdressing sets which was used in 1930s.. Most important free entrance… Fantastic gift shop! Enjoyed very much…
Pretty museum we enjoyed it. View things to discover, you can park next to the building for 2h, tight if you are going in derail
Wow, what a hidden gem! You could easily spend a half day here working through all the detailed exhibits. Some cool local stuff as well as exhibits on random topics, but everything is done well. More people should visit!
