This place is fantastic. What a gem of a hostel. I found myself needing a room for one night in NYC fairly last minute, and this was the only place I could find under $100. I was nervous because I hadn’t stayed in a hostel in years, but my nerves were quickly laid to rest upon arriving. The front desk workers were kind, energetic, and helpful, allowing me to store my bag while they readied my dorm room and letting me unwind in the common area after a long travel day. The common area is excellent. The complementary coffee was always hot and tasty, and the people were always smiling and friendly. Had a nice convo or two with travelers, enjoyed perusing the eclectic book selection. There’s even another common area downstairs with a pool table and much more. The art on the walls throughout the building is top notch - an excellent wall sized painting of Salvador Dali was right outside my room, and many other counterculture figures and pop culture characters could be found. The front desk have tons of recommendations if you need them. My room was shared with three others, with a nice private bathroom. I was afraid I’d be kept up by noise. I may have just gotten lucky, or my earplugs were on point, but I didn’t get woken up once, which is next to impossible in a hostel. I desperately needed sleep, and I ended up sleeping over 10 hours. I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to go into the city, and I have the NY Moore Hostel to thank for that. If I ever need a night in New York, no doubt I’ll be staying here again.
Less than 15min walk to 3 subway entrances (though 2 of them are actually the same line). Rooms are comfortable. Staff is very helpful - letting us check in several hours early (well appreciated especially after a red eye flight) and storing luggage for a bit after we checked out
I had the most wonderful experience here. The staff were so friendly, and the two gentlemen at the front desk went above and beyond to help me figure out the best route to take to the concert I was going to. They answered all my questions with understanding and care, and even successfully fixed my very broken suitcase zipper at 12am when it broke right before I checked out for my 5 am flight. They had such a positive attitude every time I interacted with them. The hostel is tidy with plenty of amenities and resources, and it was very quiet and relaxing at night even in common areas. This was my first time staying at a hostel in NYC and I was a bit concerned for my safety at first as a solo female traveler at a hostel, but I felt so safe and supported during my entire stay here. I would absolutely stay here again next time I visit the area. I really can’t recommend this place enough. If you need a safe, accommodating place to stay that won’t break the bank, this is the perfect place.
I checked in 7/12/24 @ approx 10pm. One of the latino male front desk clerks had absolutely no customer service skills. I walk in after flying all the way from Ohio, and commuting 1.5 hours after getting off the plane by trains and feet. Needless to say I was tired. I walked in, I was not greeted at all, I was not shown I was welcomed. He pretty much asked for my ID, gave me a towel and a key. No sense of hospitality at all. He might as well not even looked at me when interacting with me. No offer to show me around the facilities or give me any pertinent information he thought I might need. I really did not feel welcome. But that was that particular worker, this was not all of the workers. But needless to say, this has soured my experience, especially on a first impression basis. Every time I encountered this particular worker, he was sure to show a sense of coldness and borderline hostility. And I say this as a black gay male.
Also, if you are religious you may find it a little off putting the demonic statues and idols that are mostly in the common areas and demonic imagery on the walls. But this the first hostel I've been to, I will have to say there was value considering the cost you have to pay. You do have to purchase your own locks. The rooms can be a little damp and stuffy from the bathroom, so possibly a dehumidifier in the rooms. Other than that the atmosphere is relaxing.
Value for your money, facilities are clean, some resources available such as Broadway pamphlets, computers, maps, etc. Relaxing environment, potential to meet people from all backgrounds.
honestly ONLY thing I liked was just the art on the walls, I am being honest and transparent here: I am not a fearful person by any means. But I literally had a crazy lady sleeping next to me. She did not sleep the entire night and was stomping back and forth from the bed to the bathroom and going out of the room constantly throughout the night. She had the light on, and was talking to herself. I went to et assistance from the front desk in which they came to tell her to be respectful to the other guests in the room. She pretended to go to sleep and started up again... We were on the 1st floor and there was a Hasidic man smoking a cigarette starring inside the bedroom, THE WINDOWS WERE OPEN WITH NO BARS ON THE WINDOW. He was 5 ft from my bed.... the worst experience ever. I slept with my clothes I was wearing from the day. And left with my eyes bloodshot. When I told the front desk about her, they said they had problems with her all night. NEVER AGAIN. I do NOT RECOMMEND. 👎
I really didn't like the vibe of this hostel. Death to fluorescent lights!!! It's not a hospital!! Graffiti decor is so ugly and millennial. Sheets were scratchy. Rooms were too big - this sounds silly but what I've found from travelling is that hostel bedrooms need enough room for beds, luggage and maybe a mirror and chair but that's it. Anymore encourages people to hangout in rooms instead of the lounge, taking phonecalls, watching TV out loud, being a nuisance etc. They need to be a bit claustrophobic ironically - this encourages them to just be places to sleep. The staff were fine but not friendly, no one was really watching the doors so anyone could come in or out, they need to update to electronic key cards ASAP given that the location felt a bit dodgy for solo female.
I know this isn't the fault of the hostel but my roommates were all travelling for business and were super annoying, spreading things out and turning lights on early. They weren't chill because they had places to be, but couldn't afford a hotel like someone travelling for business should. Also our bathroom floor was filthy from said roommates wearing shoes in there, but housekeeping doesn't come daily to clean up. It was like showering in a muddy puddle.
I think this may be just what you get travelling to New York on the cheap because hotels are so expensive. Maybe if you booked out a room as a group it'd actually be fine. Next time I would splurge on a low budget hotel, the Freehand is good for not quite double the cost, and New York is a bit miserable to travel on the cheap anyway.
Such a fantastic hostel! We went two families with kids 10-12-15 years old. It was perfect! Staff was so helpful and kind. The place is super clean, rooms are great! So friendly and well located. We are really happy we chose to stay in Brooklyn instead of Manhattan, so worth it!

What a great addition to the neighborhood! I've visited a few times and I love the cocktails, the ambiance, and the friendly bartenders. And the food, too, especially the appetizers!

I just reached my one year anniversary at UMA and couldn't be more happy/proud. The core philosophy to "Be Unlimited" is in the name of the school and they practice what they preach. I thought it seemed ambitious to offer so many different martial ar

I must say up front: besides my own impressions after enjoying this place myself, I also know the owner very well. Although, this fact only helps this review, giving a full picture. The reason behind it is that I know what the owner's values are. Amo
