Free admission and parking. Open to the public but must apply online first. Excellent museum. covers the history of Rhode Island, torpedoes, the naval institute itself and wargames. Super friendly and informative director and curator. Highly recommended if you're visiting a service member and if not, well worth the time and effort to apply to visit.
Very nice museum on Naval Station Newport. If not active military you MUST notify the museum in advance of your visit. You also need to pass the background check to get on base. We had the museum to ourselves until we were about to leave so we were able to take lots of unobstructed pictures. Lots of interesting history to learn.
Excellent museum of Navy history and the Naval War College. There were tons of artifacts and located in a beautiful area overlooking the water.
Lots of amazing exhibits and tons of history!! The guide was extremely knowledgeable. Due to time crunch, could enjoy all of it, but will certainly return.
This is a great place to learn about the history of the Newport Navy base and War College. Admission is free, and there is a free audio tour (bring your own smartphone and headphones). The museum is in a lovely historic building and contains six rooms of exhibits, but if you want to read everything give yourself about 1 hour there. The exhibits are well presented and displayed. The staff is super friendly and very helpful, they will answer any questions you have. Just note, if you are not active military, you should call in advance to get gate clearance, as the museum is inside the Navy base. Civilians can enter, but staff prefer if you call the museum ahead as clearance (vetting process) can take time. But I would highly recommend this small, but wonderful museum if you like military history.
Really well curated. Amazing model ships. My father and I both enjoyed the time here very much.
Well detailed history of the Navy and its origins in Newport, RI. Very well done museum at this waterfront location on Newport's Navy base. Need to get clearance and show valid ID at gate to gain access onto the base.
Walk down our naval history and see how our fleet has protected is from the birth of this great nation.
For those of us who are major tennis fans for years, this is a must see if youâre in the area. Starting with the 50 yr anniversary of WTA, and the walk through the champions over the years, the stories are well written and insightful. The grounds
Fun visit, our first. They rotate the display every 90 days according to the knowledgeable staff. It is about a 2 hour ride from our house, so we will go and check out the museum a couple of times a year.
