Enjoy three exhibits under one roof: learn about U.S. 40, the Old National Road that came to be called "the Main Street Of America," explore the adventure novels and westerns of Zanesville author Zane Grey and see examples of the art pottery for which this region of Ohio was famous for in the 20th century.
The National Road-Zane Grey Museum is in three parts that cover the National Road, Zane Grey, and the Pottery industry from this area. The National Road was 621.4 miles and the first Federally funded highway. Started in Cumberland Maryland and ended in Vandalia Illinois. It was the most important land route to the west inspiring the philosophy of manifest destiny and traveled through Zanesville via the Y-Bridge. It's designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Zane Grey was born in Zanesville. He wrote 89 books and sold over 130,000,000 copies. His most successful book was The Riders of The Purple Sage. The TV series the Lone Ranger was adapted from his novel The Lone Star Ranger. Movie Star Randolph Scott played in 20 of his movies and even Actor Gary Cooper got his start playing in a Zane Grey story. The Potter connection is tied to the Pottery capital of the World here in Zanesville. We had a tour guide and the gift shop is nice. The docents were very friendly and knowledgeable.
Fabulous muesum to learn about local history and famous author and local pottery. Visited with our Homeschool Co-op and were treated as special guests. Really cool antiques and memorabilia.
Great detail of three subjects: Zane Grey, National Road, and local pottery
What a great place to visit! It's definitely worth taking a guided tour; the volunteers are all super friendly and knowledgeable. The diorama has to be seen to be believed! The detail is incredible!
The guides are so helpful & informed. The pottery display is wonderful as well as the National Road diorama & Zane Grey section. I gave tours myself for over a dozen years & the museum appeals to people from every where.
We had a great tour guide who accommodated our limited time - the displays are fantastic! We were surprised that the gift shop was limited, the opportunity to sell pottery could be quite successful.
Very well put together. Friendly staff. Optional guided tour. Includes National Road history with timeline miniatures; life of Zane Gray; and Zanesville area pottery. $7 fee for adults (over 65 got $1 off) Clean facility. Interesting outdoor exhibits. Worth the stop. At took us about an hour to tour.
