Enjoyed visiting the Nanticoke Indian Museum!! Loved learning about the rich local history of the people who lived here and seeing some of their art, way of life, customs, and stories. Native culture is COOL!! I plan to visit again and hopefully attend their annual PowWow which is in September this year (2023).
This is an impressively stocked museum considering the size. From arrowheads to woven baskets this museum features the best of Delaware's indigenous artifacts.
A beautiful little hole in the wall for local indigenous history of the area and its people and then some. Would love to see more, as well as the construction of the school and the addition to the current building in the future, to provide more information and involvement for the surrounding area and Delmarva Peninsula community going forward. Thank you so much to my host Morning Star for the lovely walkthrough and talks throughout my visit. A wonderful time to spend when you get the chance
Amazing museum! So many artifacts and history within, and Morningstar was there to explain and answer questions. Highly recommend a visit!
Wonderful little museum located in a historic Indian School building! Morning Star was a lovely guide and shared great information about the Nanticoke, their history, and the museum collections! Exhibits/Collections include everything from pottery to arrowheads, tools, beadwork, taxidermy, fine artworks, and a library collection of reference material. Worth the drive out to Millsboro for sure!
Nice little gem inside the Nanticoke's old one room schoolhouse. It's pretty quiet, so you get lovely personal attention from whoever is onsite that day, pointing out interesting bits and answering questions. Looking forward to their upcoming addition to the museum and the annual Pow Wow is always great for a visit.
The Nanticoke Indian Museum is the kind of place that you will pass a hundred times on the road, and then kick yourself that you didn't take the time to visit sooner. This little building is packed with historical information about the indigenous Lanni-Lenape Nanticoke peoples of this area. The exhibits are very engrossing and informative. See arrowheads dating back thousands of years, traps used to catch wildlife, beads used during trades with colonists, and examples of period clothing. These are some of the first tribes that Europeans had contact with, and they are often overlooked in favor of Western and Plains tribes because the movies often glorify those encounters. But this is where America started and its important to appreciate the contributions that these tribes made.
This is a very small museum with lots to see. We easily spent an hour there looking at artifacts. Best part is, it's all about Delaware's history. The docent was really friendly and knowledgeable.
