This trail was rocky and chunky nearly the whole way to the top! Beautiful aspen grove with flowers at the bottom though! And incredible views from the summit!!
Always love the views from the top. The trail itself kind of boring and long. Very chunky at the bottom. Yiu are walking in a stream bed.
Awesome, but a grind at my age 60+. You summit Shavano twice to do both.
On final descent a rescue copter is pictured. Do not know the rescue details.
About a 10 hour round trip for me including 1 hour of breaks.
It's two 14ers so if your not expecting to hike and exercise, probably not your cup of tea. The views are gorgeous and the hike is a lot a fun. A good challenge with the elevation gain though not as long mileage as other 14ers. Plenty of camping spots on the first service road on the way up.
I flew in from Madison, WI to hike with a buddy of mine. this trail gets ya going. The sights are amazing! We took off from the local camp and hopped onto the Colorado trailhead at 4:30am and made it to the trailhead for Shavano at about 5:30am after some pictures of the stars and moon and of course the sunrise in the distance. We made it all the way to the timber line before I told my buddy that I had to stop before I pulled something. I wish I had prepped a little more before coming out. Do a couple of steps, and by a couple I mean know what you are getting into. We had some other factors that kept me from going to the top, but This hike was amazing. I love the nature going into it and hiking riverbeds, rocks, dirt, roots, and the fresh pine smell is a great one. I highly recommend. I will have to come back and finish it all someday!!
A unique experience to hike 2 14ers in one day. Beautiful Trail. Lots of Smoke from Wildfires made it incredibly difficult to hike... especially breathe. ❤🌲🔥⛰🔥🤭🔥🌲❤
One of the most beautiful 14ers I've been able to climb, was my 7th. Very beautiful environment. The trailhead is difficult to get to with front wheel only, but possible. Trail is not well maintained or well demarcated, you will find yourself wandering a 1/4 mile off the path unless you are conscious of the shape the route should take. Also while in the forest you will be seemingly walking in a riverbed for about 2 miles, prepare your feet accordingly. The peak itself is extremely fun in my opinion, free style any way you want to get to the top. The way down is scary for this reason, and you need to be conscious of landmarks or you WILL get lost. Good challenge, maybe not ideal for a first timer, but could be done if they were careful and prepared.
That being said, I was able to make it to the trailhead up the terrible dirt road in a 2010 Honda Accord, with merely FWD and a 3.5 L. I will say, this is for a skilled driver at these specs, I know my car well which was why I was able to do this, have new tires and oil change, bc it will work hard.
Fun hike! Took me about 10 hours. You climb Shavano twice..on the way up and on the way down.

Wonderful coffee shop! We stopped in with our 2 kids on the way from crested butte to Denver. They kindly made the kids grilled cheeses (off menu!). Coffee was excellent, and a nice selection of books and toys.
