One of the best trails in the area. Some very interesting rock formations in the way up!
Great hike. Much better to hike from this side than the highway side. It's a decent hike with a lot of incline. Recommend to bring plenty of water. There are picnic tables half way up to rest and eat a sandwich.
Plenty of parking & many picnic areas to choose from. Take a nice & challenging hike around the lake or a real challenge (bring water, etc) climb Mt Woodson to the summit & famous "Potato Chip Rock". Great for all, dogs are allowed on leash. Check the weather as it does get very warm. A small store for fishing accessories & boat rentals, snacks & drinks.
This trail is a very popular hike because of the photo opp for IG. The trail from Lake Poway is a moderate to hard hike on a traditional trail. There is another route on the other side of the mountain that is basically a paved fire road and makes it easily accessible to more inexperienced hikers with their blue tooth radios only looking for a photo opp. The Mt Woodson trail is a nice little workout. I would definitely recommend it.
Nice hike to go out and do on regular day. Carry lots of water if it's scorching outside. It's got lot of rocky sections, so watch your step. It's dog permitted trail, so you can have your pet for company. Overall a good hike with great views along the way and at the summit.
Mount Woodson is the place where you can find the famous Potato Chip Rock in San Diego. The hiking trail willl take you to the top to enjoy the view... Talking about the The Potato Chip Rock - as the name suggests, it is a rock that looks like a potato chip 🤷♂️ The hike to the spot is nice with lots of nice panoramic viewpoints to look over the city of San Diego. It is vey steep and long. So it is necessary to bring lots of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks and some cap... If you go from the Ramona side, there is a nice parking spot available as well. You won't get lost in this hike, so no maps needed.
This is not for the faint of heart. Trying to get to that Potato chip rock was a lot of work, I personally didn't get to the summit, came short by like half a mile. We were all dead by the end of the trip. Best to come early because walking back in blazing sun is not fun. Very hard hike
Trail is very well maintained.the beginning is a good warm up.levels out in the middle & alot of step climbing towards the potato chip rock. 7 miles round trip. Better to start early to avoid too much sun.
