A small but interesting museum and antique shop in the old train depot buildings, plus an additional house display where orphaned children lived after losing parents in the most horrible Minnesota fires in the history of the state. Museum includes old footage of survivors stories on a documentary for PBS.
You can't park your trailer here anymore if you are riding the Soo Line trail. Based on an experience I had last year at this depot, I will not be spending any money in the Moose Lake area when I ride my ATV on the trail.
Great local history - 1918 fire, railroad, and they have. Research library with: area yearbooks, newspapers, obituaries, cemetery info, family research files.. Staff will even do the research for you. They also have an event center people can rent out.
Quick stop offers a great glimpse of the history of the area and the impact of the fire to the people and the land.
AMAZING. Wow. So many artifacts and personal effects. The donated Red Cross Home that you can walk through is like stepping back in time. Beautiful place and tribute to the poor souls that were lost and a testimony to the strength of those who lived and rebuilt
Worth visiting! I learned a lot.
Was a cool place to check out, definitely ask questions, the items on display are not bad but we got more info by talking to someone that was there working.
I was expecting a nice bit of.detail about the terrible fires of 1918. I was also expecting a $5 family admission as advertised on Explore Minnesota Web page ( May through October 2015). Reality was that 90% was like a county museum with a slight focus on railway related artifacts. There was one small corner of another room where all of the fire information resided. The Hinckley fire museum is much better and is worth seeing. Also, apparently rates increased as there was no family rate- only a $3 per person rate so my family of four cost $12 rather than the advertised $5. I showed the Web page to the attendant but he didn't know what to do. For me personally, it was not worth the trip to the museum, if learning about the 1918 fire was a priority.
