When we arrived we were sold an “upgrade” to a larger room with a balcony only to find out after agreeing that the balconies were all closed. The rooms are very dated and tired it’s obvious there has not been any upgrade in well over a decade since we have been travelling to Hawaii. The pool is very small but the grounds are very picturesque and clean. The staff were wonderful which leads me to my next point. There was a worker strike which began on our second last day so all bar service, and cleaning staff were on strike. That meant no room cleaning no new linen no new towels no bins emptied etc and no support from the hotel this was disgraceful. The hotel and management handled this very poorly with management hiding in their offices refusing to deal with customers face to face rather relying on the front of house staff to bear the brunt of complaints. The hotel is not cheap it’s far from a five star hotel with room ammenities being on the basic drive in motel standard. The prices for food and beverages were outrageous given the lack of quality. I certainly wouldn’t recommend anyone staying here any time soon until a major overhaul takes place. I was informed that the strike would continue for up to a month. Please consider all these factors if planning on staying here.

This is a beautiful hotel. Just by the ocean. Service was great but unfortunately employees went in strike during my stay. Was loud with protesters and there was absolutely no services in hotel. No room service, no restaurant or bar nothing was working here. No cleaning services, no towels or sheets replaced. I still have the hotel 5 starts because is an amazing place. I just hope they sign contracts with their hard working employees soon they return to work and continue doing the amazing job they usually do. I am more mad they are not treated with respect than because of my dirty room.

Definitely the most beautiful hotel grounds I saw on my whole trip, and I was lucky enough to stay there! The main lobby is beautiful, front entrance is stunning and central, and the back patio was breathtakingly perfect every time I looked outside. The Beach Bar (which had great food/service), with its 100yr old banyan tree, had a lovely atmosphere, night or day, and it's just one step from the beach -- though it's a smaller section of the beach, this section is great for swimming, is less crowded, and has fun activities to do for an extra cost like boat trips and surf rentals.||The rooms in the Bayan Tower where I stayed were less than stunning. Just a little bit dirty and outdated, but they completely get the job done and work well if you're planning on adventuring out rather than staying in the room and relaxing. All balconies in that wing are also closed at the moment :/. Other cons I can think of are that there isn't really an affordable sit down dinner option here and the pool closed at 6pm + there's no hot tub. Also, the historical tour ended up running 30min-1hr over what is listed which made us quite late to our next booked activity.||Tips: #1 No need to buy or bring inflatable floaties because the beach often had many leftover by nighttime that were free to take for your trip. Also, the hotel pool desk sometimes had floaties/chairs/umbrellas that people had willingly donated which were also free. #2 I believe all of the hotel activities were completely free and included with your stay, so in the weeks prior or as soon as you get there, book as many as you can! We did lei making, morning yoga, and the historical tour (the Moana is the oldest hotel in Waikiki). There was also a sunrise ceremony, ukelele lessons, and a kids storytelling, though the first two were completely booked a couple days in advance. #3 For $5 per person, per day, you can ride the Waikiki Trolley pink line up and down Waikiki, all the way to the Ala Moana shopping center. Great way to see the city and very affordable transportation. Stops running around 7pm-8pm and also has rates for multi-day tickets. #4 We had a secret discount for the Bishop Museum (also highly recommend though it's further) as hotel guests. No one told us about this but it made our 3-person ticket go from $109 to $35 total! So useful. #5 Take the first elevator you see in the lobby to the 6th floor and go to the balconies on either side for a scenic view of the beach!

Stayed 4 nights in a Banyan room on the third floor facing the entrance of the hotel. Room was much larger than a standard hotel room, but very dated. The closet was broken and the bathroom tiles could use a refresh. This place is definitely “historic”.||Constantly busy in the lobby area, and the live music on Friday and Saturday nights from the lobby were not at all drowned out by the windows.||Food options were limited with one restaurant on site and a small pickup window. ||Pool was very small but not too crowded. Difficult to find seating in the afternoon and pool staff did not monitor use. Locals also use the amenities as they are friends with pool staff. ||Beach outside of the hotel gets crowded after 11. ||Service from the front desk, restaurants, valet, and poolside were good. And the elevators are plentiful.

This hotel is very historical and beautiful. Our room was ready early and the front desk was very attentive and prompt, and it was a quick and easy check in. We were in the historical banyan room ocean view, which was beautiful, however the shower was kind of dirty. The pool is way too small for a hotel with that many rooms. Pool cabanas and beach chairs get booked up quickly. The location in Waikiki is perfect and in a prime spot close to everything. The hotel is definitely on the louder side so be aware.

URGENT! DON’T STAY HERE UNTIL THEY FIX ROOM BALCONIES! READ THE FINE PRINT! ||I’ve been staying at the Moana Surfrider for over a decade. It is an ideal location and a classic hotel. ||When I checked in August 25th, I did not have a reservation. I needed a room for a night. They said at the front desk I needed to do it online. With a long line behind me, I rushed to get a room ||I booked a $526.00 per night suite. I like a room where I can sit out on the deck, here the music and watch the surfers. I also like to eat and drink on the balcony and dry my swim gear. ||I was shocked when I got to the room and the balcony door was locked close. The room was blasting a cold air conditioning. You couldn’t get the evening breeze, hear the music, and are trapped in a room with ac. ( the antithesis of Hawii) ||When I rushed downstairs to ask what is going on, the lady behind the desk said all rooms ( minus top floor suites) decks are locked shut ||Frustrated, her next response was “ you should of checked the fine print”. Remember, she couldn’t check me in online and people were anxiously behind me. ||As a regular customer for over a decade who has booked several rooms, in was

Only had 2 days but I made the most of it with activities. I was able to register for lei making and they allowed me to be so creative. Thank you to Dianu, Lisa, Healaui are the three artists managing the class. They were helpful and funny. A great way to wear Aloha. The beach bar was full of great bartenders and attached to the beach. The bell desk were very helpful and fast. It was historic and new age at the same time. Every turn was beautiful

It doesn’t get better than this one. Worth every penny to stay here. The service is pristine and the building is perfect. Sit in a rocking chair and relax. The sand is as close as it gets. The older rooms are smaller but they are super clean. It makes you feel fancy.
