Oh my GOODNESS. I LOVE IT HERE. I’ve been coming here for about a year and this is hands down by far my FAVORITE place to hike and get away from the world. This place is HUGE with so many trails, blue ponds, and it’s just GORGEOUS and so untouched. There’s even a super old washed up car deep in the woods, half buried. There’s a random little shack if you walk a distance into the preserve. The water is so clear. I took my maternity photos here. Oh my god i can go on. I have walked miles of this place and have seen SO MUCH and still have so much to see. Come here if you want REAL NATURE and pure peace.
Southern part of the Pine Barrens. This is just one section to explore. The area is huge with a preserve on the eastern part . Neat place and definitely a good spot to hike and check out a couple times . There is a few different bodies of water back there close to one another. Also “blue holes” way back on the preserve side. Also you can drive in from Rt 49 for the ponds section and the road dead ends at the boat ramp back there.
Great place for hiking. Miles and miles of trails. If you park near the railroad tracks you can follow the tracks to the left until you link up with a dirt trail that follows along the tracks. Take that until you get to the second left and take that trail to the blue hole. You'll see graffitti that says blue hole dont drown along the way. Its about a 2-3 mile hike. GPS works and can guide you if you get lost. Dog owners lookout for broken glass in sand along blue hole.
Absolutely beautiful location. Many ponds and streams in the area with varying terrain. Investigate a little more and find some history. Several structures hidden within the woods as well as a railroad and a trestle crossing a swift moving stream. Spent 3 plus hours here hiking and taking pictures. Also nearby a boat launch ramp for the ponds. I will be returning to investigate more of this hidden gem. Easily accessible from state route 49. The access road is mostly paved, with the exception of a small portion that gets a little rough. Parking at the boat ramp is adequate.
I have been going here with my kids for over a decade every summer. The last few years they have closed it during the summer. We used to love going there to walk around and see the wildlife as well as catch fish. we get our licences every year. The park rangers were always good about pointing out neat things to see as well as where to catch the best fish. Since the closures we look foreward to being there in the fall. This past weekend 9-10-23 was a shock. The state has destroyed it. they have dumped gravel in 5 foot banks all over to narrow the road and block all access to any water that isnt at the boat ramp. no parking signs are nailed up every where. no trespassing signs are everywhere. paths we used to take are off limits now. the only place you can go now at all is the boat ramp. you can take ways around to get to some of the other spots. but they are all marked no trespassing so if you are caught there you are fined. these are the places that you used to be able to sit and fish and picnic. Taxpayers are no longer PERMITTED to enjoy the WMA that out tax dollars and license dollars pay to maintain. Not pleased with this at all. If anyone knows anything about how to fight this id love to hear it.
Exercise extreme caution if hiking. I discovered many ticks on my legs after a short walk. I do not recommend for anything other than kayaking. And the water is not pristine as seen in other pictures, it is murky with algae.
Great place to cool off bring your dogs or go kayaking or fishing. Please take home all your trash 🗑
