Great little spot for a person to see old property and site built in the 1800s.
Cool little history walk.
Incredible historic remnants of where settlers lived, sometimes in different generations and at different times. It is a sin that thieves have removed much of the artifacts over time. I remember how much more there was here in the '90s and yet it is still a great place to be solemn and enjoy nature + history in 2022.
Really cool that this Homestead was built in 1900 and was still there to see for owner Starkey in 1937. The park is 1 of my favorites, if not my favorite, as it shows the wilderness of 'old Florida' preserved for today with a prairie and swamps with Lilly Pads, which I love! Also you can camp in 2 ways, tent & cabin which is built in cracker style.
Part of Starkey Preserve. Nice walk in the woods
There are tales that this place is haunted. You can find YouTube videos of people visiting at night. But in reality this place is hauntingly beautiful. The homestead area itself has a path with signs explaining what is and was there. This was a local boyscout project and they did a wonderful job. This armadillo shell was up the Twisted Pines trail a ways from the actual homestead site. I left it there but either someone else or an animal snagged it.
The homestead was somewhat interesting, though I couldn't see some of the ruins because they had deteriorated so much. It's better thought of as a sidenote to the great hiking trails and camping at the park.
Local Boy Scouts (specifically an Eagle Scouts project) have created a nice walk round this old Florida homestead. There is a kiosk with history information and several plaques denoting sites of interest. You can find on YouTube videos of investigation into the sites supposed haunting.
