Mauna Kea State Park - Halepōhaku Area - Park in Hilo - 75 Aupuni St, USA

Worth a visit but for us, we were covered in clouds there. The visitor center had a huge line outside of it so we skipped it. It was hard to see anything but the clouds were cool to watch. Very cold, bring warm clothes, layers and a rain jacket too.

You can experience some out of the world views from here (plan for the sunset). And its a great drive, even if you do not plan to visit the summit. Please do not miss this spot in the Big Island!

Man! Met some of the friendliest park rangers! Our car had a dead battery and AAA was not going to travel here. The park rangers charged our car and got us back on the road. Big thanks guys! Side note don’t rent a car from thrifty… 2 exchanges in 2 weeks is beyond ridiculous! All with safety related issues.

This is a scaly-breasted munia. Look for him near the parking area.

This is one of the most spectacular place on the world.

It’s a great pitstop between Kona and Hilo. Especially if you’re feeling sleepy, the cool fresh air will wake you up!
