I have never driven down this road until recently. Just wanted to see where it went. Went down the South Tropical way from Merritt Island. On the way there, I saw some big empty expensive houses with no one in them. But it looks like an amazing spot for fishing, and I do love a good Red Snapper.
Historical place built by Mr Mathers in the 1920's. Use to goto Mathers Bridge restaurant on West Side back in the 80's. So much has changed, but bridge tenders R still great at on demand openings.
This swing bridge is an inspiring feat of engineering. Mathers bridge not only connects two land masses but brings the community together. From the bridge operator dutifully opening and closing for boat traffic, to the pedestrians out for a bit of exercise and local fishermen hoping to catch a monster red fish. Mathers bridge is a special place.
Love to fish here. Tonight we fished with our 10 year old Grandson, we caught and released Small Mangrove Snappers, the bait we used was live Shrimp. I fished here with my Dad and Brother when I was a young girl.

This bridge is horrible . They needed dedicated time the bride is gonna be open and closed . Or an app to let you know when its open .
Fishing off this bridge during peak fishing seasons can be amazing. Be sure to bring an umbrella to keep the sun off of you as there is no shade and parking is far from the fishing zone of the bridge. Have caught every species of fish here and shrimping in the spring is good
