A great little beach with not too many people. The way to the beach is a little walk. The road is unpaved, a lot of holes and stones. Cars of all types were driving on the road, but they drive real slow. We finally made it there, and it was worth it.
My favorite beach on the Big island. Possibly all of Hawaii. Love the perfect sunsets here nightly and the seclusion. Most of the crowds clear out after 5pm. The park rangers do want you to leave at dusk if you park inside but if you hike in then feel free to stay and hang out with the turtles after dark. To get to the parking lot you’ll need a 4WD but many sedans have made it in fine, just go slow and avoid the steep holes lol
Beautiful beach & swimming was fun. The road in is very rough… slow going.
A lovely beach with not too many people. If you arrived with the aircraft you could see the beach already during your landing. The way to the beach takes quite some time. There is a parking lot right on the highway. From there you can walk or take the unpaved road by car further down to the beach and the second parking lot. Attention: the road is unpaved, a lot of holes and stones. We saw some people driving with the convertibles, but I wouldn't recommend it. The beach is one of the few spots where you might be able to see 1 of the 8 remaining monkey seals of big Island. We were lucky that day and he slept all day long next to us.
Le chemin d' accès est plus que compliqué mais la récompense est au bout du chemin Un 4*4 est conseillé. Plage superbe avec des paysages de carte postale.
Loved our evening at Mahai-‘ula beach. Definitely one of our favorite beaches during our time on the Big Island. It has sand for the kids & decent snorkeling. Option for shade from trees. Getting there was a white-knuckled drive though. The “unimproved lava rock” road was pretty sketchy. We came from Colorado so we’re used to these kinds of roads, & even our SUV rental (Sorento) didn’t have enough clearance for some of the drops & potholes. The Tacomas & 4 Runners had an easier time. Also be warned that they have a strict “gate close” time. The area closes at 6:30p (right at sunset this time of year & the gate closes at 7pm. You cannot linger to watch the sunset because you have the hike back to the car & then a 20 min drive to the gate entrance.
Beautiful little beach, nice area to swim and bob around on boogie boards. Gorgeous sandy shore with plenty of shade and not too crowded.
An amazing beach, beautiful water, the sand was lovely, and very quiet. The monkseal having a nap was a bonus.
