When we arrived on Key West, we discovered our AirBnB was surrounded by chickens crowing from 5 am on. Those lodgings really disappointed, but when we talked to Laura at the Lighthouse, she took time to show us three available rooms for the rest of our stay and we won a well-deserved refund from AirBnB and got a room here. The room is small, but efficient, and furnishings are high quality. The property was quiet and while there are chickens about, we never heard them! The pool was very warm. We had a nice time hanging out in Isabel's during a rainy day when they had live musicians there. The included continentall breakfast was also very convenient. The staff of the hotel were almost all extremely friendly and helpful, and it's one of the few places where housekeeping is still included. The bathrooms have nice, high quality shampoo/conditioner/soap. We weren't accustomed to humidity, but the in-room air conditioner helped keep our room cool and dry. Cannot say enough nice things about Laura--we saw her repeatedly throughout our stay. She remembered our names and offered us great tips on where to eat. The hotel location was so convenient--steps from the action on Duval Street and about a fifteen minute walk to either end of Old Key West, but the hotel's street itself was sleepy and quiet every day and night.
Worst ever value for money experience - on the plus side, our room was lovely and spacious, the location is great, however at $900 per night this is to be expected. Everything else though was not on par with the price tag. |Reception staff gave the impression that it was very inconvenient having to deal with guests (I have now seen the many reviews noting this before and the management response that this will be addressed in training - clearly this is not having any effect!), parking is advertised when booking the hotel but in reality not available and the two „bars“ Isabel‘s and the Bungalow Bar that are promoted on the website are not really there. |Don‘t waste your money on a place that only looks nice, but in reality is dated, in need of renovation and requiring a huge hospitality upgrade.
Rooms are immaculate. Stayed at a small guest cottage with my own beautiful patio. Fabulous atmosphere. And you're staying right across the street from the famous Hemming House. Pool was absolutely perfect. A lot of very relaxing garden paradise patios with hammocks and hanging chairs. The pool side bar was amazing! This place is perfect for people who just want to relax and be on vacation, kid free!
From when I walked in, I got a really good vibe from the hotel, it’s in a great location walkable, quiet, and the hotel itself is nice, could be updated, but overall a good space.
My issues with the hotel were:
1. the pillows in the room had holes in them as you can see in the video and were stained. 2. Overall, I think they could do a better job cleaning the rooms like other reviews say.
3. Additionally, like another review says there was a cockroach in our bathroom, so be aware of that.
If it wasn’t for these things, I think this could be a great hotel. It just needs better quality control, supervision, and training.
A couple of things I did enjoy: the hotel is pet friendly, which was a major plus without any additional fees, it was in front of the Hemingway house, on a quiet street, and within walking distance to the southernmost point, had free breakfast, bagels, fruit, cereal and yogurt, and had a nice little seating areas around the hotel.
Great location and fantastic staff! We stayed at the Lighthouse hotel after our original booking for our honeymoon fell through due to unexpected construction (totally different hotel). The Kimpton staff helped us find a great room same-day! Sky is amazing. She helped us find and hold a room that was much like what we had originally booked. She gave great dinner recommendations also. She and all the staff really went above and beyond. The room was great and the pool area is lovely. You can’t beat the location near the lighthouse and Hemingway house!
Wonderful stay, centrally located and we walked everywhere during our stay. Parking behind hotel is limited. Staff was very pleasant and accommodating. My only negative was the price with all the fees and tax and parking cost, but Key West lodging is expensive. But for a special occasion it was money well spent.
Tiny rooms, the hotel feels a little drab, but awesome location and friendly bar staff.
This is the third Kimpton property I’ve stayed at in Key West (Winslow’s and Ella’s) — I think these properties were a great idea and were probably wonderful when they first opened. However, since then, they all feel a little tired and not up to the Kimpton standard.
The room: King room was incredibly small, and unbelievably I saw rooms that were even smaller. AC very noisy and runs nonstop (doesn’t bother me, I enjoy the noise to sleep, but others may not.) Room was very clean, comfy bed, but low ceilings and a closet bathroom.
The property: mostly well kept, needs some painting and maintenance. The pool is small, but the live music was great. Nice outdoor seating areas and a lovely bar.
The location: just one block from Duval and right next to Hemingway House. Perfect location. Walkable to everywhere. It’s the reason to stay here, it’s the reason we stayed here.
I’d stay here again — but wish Kimpton would reinvest a little in these properties. The Hemingway suite looks lovely, but pricey.
My husband and I are big Ernest Hemingway fans. I booked a stay at Kimpton Lighthouse because it’s across the street from Hemingway’s House, where he wrote 70% of his works. I had this vision of spending New Year’s weekend reading Hemingway on a private front porch under the palms with a view of where he wrote the book in my hands. So I was willing to pay more than I normally would for that experience.
The king suites with a front porch aren’t exactly as advertised. It’s a historic property with three shotgun bungalows and a hotel, and the bungalows are chopped up into rooms. So there are 52 different rooms available, and they can’t provide a picture of every room. We paid $2300 for two nights for a king suite with a front porch, because it has a view of the Hemingway House across the street, or at least that’s the way it’s advertised on the website. But when we got there, we were put in a larger suite in the back. The upstairs deck, which was not a private porch, was the “porch access” that we were paying extra for. However, when we explained that to Laura, she was very quick to get us in a room with front porch access. So it’s not the hotel’s fault or the staff’s fault, it’s the fault of Kimpton’s website. If you’re interested in having a view of Hemingwag’s House from the front porch, just make sure to put that in your special requests box. (I attached a picture of the map, which Kimpton should put on their website, but the private front porches are rooms 1, 3, and 6.) I’d also call them to make sure they got the request.
The hotel itself was very nice. I loved the property. Other reviewers mention roosters but I really liked it. There was also an iguana in the palm tree next to our room! I thought that was cool. Ans yes, it might be a little noisy, but that’s because it’s across the street from one of Key West’s biggest attractions. I actually thought it was pretty quiet and private, all things considered.
I cannot emphasize enough how accommodating the staff is. Laura is so friendly, and I really loved talking with her. She recommended restaurants for us and booked us reservations on New Year’s Eve! That’s a big deal! She also told us about the best sights to see on the island; she was extremely knowledgable.
I would absolutely go back to Kimpton Lighthouse because, due to Laura’s quick thinking, I got my vacation wish of reading Hemingway looking Hemingway’s House under the palms, and it was as magical as I dreamed!
