Pound for pound, the best trail that Zion has to offer. A bit more popular that it was a few years ago, but still offers much more solace and peace than anything in the canyon. Some may find it treacherous to climb over large boulders again and again or cross the river an almost obscene amount of times, but it’s totally worth all the “trouble”.
Subway from the bottom up. A lot of fun, but challenging scrambling/bushwhacking. We started at 6 am and finished around 5 pm. We went as far as swimming on this cloudy and ominous day.
Absolutely the most spectacular end to any hike! Except this in an out and back so technically the spectacular part is actually the halfway point. You descend into the canyon pretty quickly on a steep path over loose rocks and scree. Then you walk 4+ miles along the river bed, finding your own route. There are faint trails on both sides of the river. Is the trail on the left or the right? Yes. Past Arcangel Falls the trail disappears. Are you supposed to walk in the river itself to go further? Yes. It's worth it. If you don't believe me just look at the photos!
One of the west-most accessible points of the park (coming from St. George). The hike was really beautiful and quite a lot of vert straight from the get-go. Multiple river crossings made the trek fun, even without proper gear.
Yes yes aaaaand yes. You will need a permit and please do your research before you attempt this hike. Its worth every second of preparation. Also recommend starting earlier so you have enough time to hang out at the end.
The hike down to the river isn’t bad, but in the sun at the end of your day you’ll immediately understand why they call the hike “strenuous”.
We followed the established trails most of the way up to the Subway, but walked right through the river on the way back. This was much more fun!
Make sure not to miss the opportunity to swim to the waterfall at the end of the line after the Subway. An experience we will never forget.
Hiking to subway was far less strenuous than I expected. Very slippery in a few sections and definitely need water shoes, but not much scrambling. The Subway section is very short but gorgeous. I wouldn't say you need to swim to the end, not very thrilling.
We started bottom up left fork (Subway) hiking @07:00am with 2 kids (6 & 4yrs). Going down to the valley was not that difficult. we tried to follow and find the dry trail and it made our hiking more difficult. once my kids fall down in to the water, hiking became easier!! we tried to stay in the water except couple huge rocks and we could get the subway @13:00. water was so cold, but we did swim at the pool and get in to the waterfalls. started to go back @14:30 and it took 5 and half hours to get back to parking lot. It was 13 hrs hike with 2 small kids and 2nd hardest hike i tried with my kids. (1st one was Yosemite point)Subway is my favorite hiking at Zion and good luck for the lottery!!!
