I little nook on the side of the road with great fishing and camping. You can set up camp here, launch your boat, or just fish off the bank
Beautiful sites on a gorgeous river. Back in, pull thru or tent camping. This is our 8th year in a row....family tradition.
Great spot for boating, picnicking & camping. Fun playground for kids & a nice swim area
Le Page Park sits on the John Day River just before it flows into the Columbia River about two hours east of Portland, OR. There is a day use area and a campground area. The day use area has a beautiful green lawn with grills beside picnic tables as well as a few tables under small shelters. That portion of the park has a boat ramp as well as boat trailer parking and a small but nice playground structure. There is a coarse sand beach bordering a slight cove in the river as well as both the day use and campground. We stayed two nights in the campground. Unlike the day use section, the campground has no grass - just dried weeds and gravel that was unsightly as well as unpleasant for our dog’s walks. The campground was clean and all sites have a view of the river and the wind turbine topped surrounding hills. There were postings that the river water had E. coli count too high for swimming AND that drinking water should be boiled as it’s ecological count was also high. We should have been notified of this by the ranger as we entered. Bottom line is that day use area is very nice for picnics and boating (but not swimming at this time). The campground is okay but we’ll look for a different one the next time we’re in the area.
Great access from the freeway, but as expected, lots of noise from trucks crossing the bridge. LOVELY views. Expect wind and poor cell service. Nevertheless, would stay there again. PS great if you want to fish
Quiet, beautiful, well maintained, excellent service. It's worth organizing your trip around. If you have a national parks pass, it's half the normal $30 daily fee. You can get one via the attendant at the entrance boorh. One of the better uses of our federal tax dollars.
The most disappointing was the fire ban that wasn't indicated. I searched for the fire ban and didnt find one online. Also, not the greatest for tent camping. The tent sites are only available during the weekend and have no water spigots. The RV sites that have tent sites are more of a flat land with no trees. Even the reservation picture showed a tree but is clearly severly outdated. The men's bathroom only had one working toilet and maintenance frequently in and out without a real fix. Cold showers only in the bathroom. Also no soap, just hand sanitizer. Saw other campers washing their dishes in the bathroom sink because there was no water spigots. Also no dogs allowed on the beach. There wasn't much of a bug issue but that's because we had 20-30 mph winds. The small beach was the best feature but it is filled with seaweed. This park is much better for day use
Between the freeway full of truck traffic on the bridge, frequent trains and being in a major flight path for jets overhead, do not expect to experience the peaceful sounds of nature! It's a nice and well tended park, but the noise pollution is ridiculous!
