This was a super cool museum! There were a ton of old trains, many of which you can enter and see inside of them. The staff was nice and helpful. I don't know that much about trains but I had a great time and learned a lot. I imagine that the experience would also be great for someone who is very knowledgeable about trains too -- there are so many amazing things to see! I think children would have a fun time here as well since you can go inside so many of the train cars. I definitely recommend checking this museum out if you are in Duluth!
Spent a Saturday afternoon touring the museum. What a treasure! Lots of fascinating history and impressive machinery. Good spot for a family trip. If you are a real history buff, you could easily kill a full day here
This place will exceed my expectations! There are so many different types of trains to climb into, push buttons and pull levers and start the wheels turning on one if them. There are supplemental videos and informative signage. Besides the train there are little and gigantic accessories and pieces from salt 1900s (hand car, crane for picking up topped carts, dining cart and railway China collections, giant slag transport car, experience lantern display... And SO much more! Just when you think you've seen everything, you walk outside and there is an entire yard full of other trains!
Great museum, its very interactive and informational, no readers fatique at all. While I do enjoy that people can interact with historical objects here more than other museums, I worry that some people might be too rough with them. Aside from that, one could easily spend an entire day there by yourself or with your family and not get bored. It does a great Job of going over Minnesota and Railway History, as well as Duluth's History. Definitely worth the admission price.
Museum that allows visitors to explore inside trains and offers a 75 minute North Shore Railroad ride. Museum is $14 admission while the train ride is $22 but if you do both then they give you -$7 discount so it’s $29 total for both per person. North Shore train ride is better if you only have time/money to do one.
I liked how you could go up into many of the train cars and see inside. I especially enjoyed learning about the one HUGE steam engine. Having the Hobo sign game for the kids was a stroke of genius! It kept my active nephew in particular from getting bored. My family enjoyed the train ride since they had never been on a train before. We took the short, scenic trip along the lake. I recommend you sit on the lake side of the train, though, because your views won't be as good on the other side. My niece and the kids moved to the snack car where they could look out the window and see more of the views being described on the recorded narration. This would be particularly beautiful in the fall. We noticed the fall 2023 rides are already sold out!
This is a really great educational place for all ages. Our preschooler loved playing with the train tables and climbing onto the trains with her big sister. They had 2 movie theaters with different movies. There was also a neat cabin with the garden for pretend play for kids and some other exhibits showcasing different things from 1900s. Can't wait to take the train ride in the future. Lots of signage about the trains, and when they were built, used, etc. Perfect place for a rainy day.
