PbK is one of the worst systems I have ever used - professionally or personally. There is zero investment in UX (user experience). It is shoehorned into an infrastructure that was developed for one office, but failed to be properly developed for other offices. It has attempted to develop a broader array of services, but has done so by stacking it on top of a very specific prosecutor structure, meaning that the user experience for anything other than a criminal division is confusing, to say the least. Every single job duty takes longer than it did prior to adopting PbK, and that includes 20 year old systems. I have worked with PbK, and I have been forced to use support staff in a way I have never needed to before. Because I can't expect to figure out codes and archaic terms for each entry, I now require staff to perform basic functions that I was able to perform prior to PbK. The developers have not, over years of working on various iterations, figured out the most basic work flows of any civil process I work on (including tax appeal petitions, asset forfeiture, or property litigation). Training is awful. There is no plan for training. The trainer shows up, and bounces through the poorly designed interface with little understanding of how the office performs its work. The trainer fails to listen to questions, and therefore the responses are not tailored to the question. The trainer is dismissive of concerns, and when problems arise, blames the testing system, the local liaison, a local software version, or a service that is "beyond" the core competency of the PbK system. One example of this "beyond the core system" is their method of handling time records and document management. The trainer continues to claim that, because PbK is a case management system, and not a document management or time management system, that those elements should not be expected to work. Of course, I was part of the hiring of the system (I was overruled from my strong aversion to PbK due to price), and both document and time management were expected to be included. PbK is decades behind in user experience, and seems to use coders that have no ability to optimize data transfers. Even a list of 900 cases can lock up the browser for 30 seconds or more. I am writing this at this time, because my efforts to enter time to be billed (I only actually bill a fraction of my time) has taken me over 30 minutes to do, and has cause the system to shut down twice.
