One of the most welcoming gyms I’ve ever been to. Great mix of beginner and more advance class and the coach is a roll model for even the most experienced grapplers. Island grappling academy goes down in my books as a have to go to when in Galveston, thank you once again for the great experience 🥋🙏
Very welcoming gym with great instruction. I joined a couple months ago and everybody I’ve met has been friendly and helpful. The coaches and the students have a lot of experience that they’re always happy to share.
The facility itself is really clean and nice, with changing rooms, a viewing area for parents, and a side area for kids as well. The owners and coaches are very passionate about what they do and it reflects in their gym.
This gym has a LOT going for it! Firstly, it's clean. The mats, bathrooms, and changing rooms are all clean and well organized. Secondly, the gym culture is very inclusive. I have enjoyed training at this gym as a woman or a person with a disability. The gym and instructors made accommodations for my disability without me having to ask them to in advance. During class, the instructors are able describe the move or concept, or simply guide me, so that I can understand the mechanics of the lesson even though my vision is impaired. The other students are very well mannered and I have been treated kindly by everyone I have met at the gym. Third, the mats are soft and well padded. This is extremely important so that injuries are reduced when sparing or in class. A hard mat doesn't make a person any tougher, it just makes them more bruised. The mats are also smooth so that there is less mat burn when in no gi. Overall, 10/10, would recommend the noon classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
First and foremost I want to thank coaches Mike, Aubrey, Jess and the rest of the academy for allowing me the privilege to share the mats with them. They were extremely welcoming and kind, I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Whether you're starting your jiu-jitsu journey, looking for a new gym to call home or just visiting this is the gym to be. The facility was clean the mats well taken care of and the people were absolutely phenomenal. Next time I'm I'm Galveston this is going to be my first stop and it definitely should be yours too! Thank you all again for your hospitality!
Stopped in during our vacation. If you are looking for a low-key, welcoming, and educational experience, look no further. Coach Aubrey was very welcoming and walked me through the move they were focusing on. Definitely stop by if you are just looking to get a good and informative workout in. Thanks again
I have to add some more good things after going back a couple more times. I was privileged to meet Mike and Jess the other owners and received even more top-notch instruction. What is really going to stick with me is what was said after the last class I attended. The word family was spoken, and how a family exists during training. In karate, we call it our dojo family and preach it to the students on how we are all trying to make each other better, and no one is greater than that family. Definitely got the exact same vibe here, but then to hear words that I have spoken myself really speaks a lot for the character of the academy. I wish you all the best and keep doing what you are doing!
I was looking into BJJ academies to broaden my 10yr old daughter's technique when a long time friend recommended Island Grappling Academy and they have done that and much more. Such a welcoming team, always pushing her to go above and beyond, she's such a confident competitor now. I trust Mike and Aubrey so much that my 6 yr old niece, my dad and myself joined the team. They have such a clean facility, impeccable restrooms, private lockerrooms/changing rooms, a waiting area for the parents with a very clear view of the mats and a play room for the kids to wait in while parents train. This gym has become part of my family.
First time training at Island Grappling and it was a great experience. I dropped in for a class and the instructors and all team members were super welcoming. The instruction was great and better rolls. I’ll be back to train any time I am in Galveston.
My son absolutely loves dropping in at IAG. They have welcomed him with open arms since day one! The coaches are extremely knowledgeable of their sport and you can definitely see how much passion they have too! I highly recommend!
