Holiday Inn Express & Suites Shawnee-Kansas City West, an IHG Hotel - Featured Reviews (595)
During my recent weekend stay at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Shawnee-Kansas City West, I had a wonderful experience. Despite its proximity to the busy 435 interstate, the hotel was remarkably quiet, providing a peaceful retreat nestled in a nice wooded area. The staff was incredibly friendly and courteous, making the stay even more pleasant.
The rooms were well-kept and clean, with beds that were perfectly made. The bathroom was a highlight, featuring a large walk-in shower with glass doors and delightful decorative touches like towels folded into swan shapes. In the morning, the breakfast buffet offered a great selection of items, and the large dining space made for a comfortable and enjoyable meal. Overall, I was very pleased with my stay and would highly recommend this hotel.
This hotel was a nightmare. When we first walked into the room, we were met with two large fans and the room was at 75 degrees. I went back down to the front desk and asked if the AC was not working. I was met with a tone of “the previous client wanted them. Do you want them removed?”…..because the AC isn’t working… It was 90+ degrees that weekend so AC was needed. After a second trip down to the front desk, I asked if we could move rooms and they begrudgingly did. Weather moved in that night and lightning struck the hotel. The AC was knocked out. While they are trying to restart the AC units, they had the guests that were in the lobby answering the phone and watching the doors. When they couldn’t get the restart to work, they said they would “call someone in the morning” instead of making an emergency call. It was a miserable night of trying to get any sleep. We were supposed to stay 2 nights but thankfully they “let us out of the contract” as the problem still hadn’t been resolved at 4:00. When we left, our room had reached 78 degrees. There was also no hot water and they were down to one really slow elevator. And the biggest kick in the shorts was being charged the full price for the miserable night’s stay. Will not being staying here again.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn for a family reunion. The staff was very accomodating. However, the rooms and lobby/hallways were incredibly hot. On the 4th floor it was 82 in the hallway (other areas were just as warm).
One of the elevators was broken, so waiting for an elevator was brutal.
Our room smelled musty and didn't cool down as much as I would have liked.
Definitely needs some updating.
This is not the hotel's fault but there is construction on Midland Drive, so to exit and enter 435 you have to drive to the next exit on Shawnee Mission parkway, so the nearby amenities on the east side of the highway weren't readily accessible.
Positive: Location Negative: Bad smell in lobby and really pungent odor of mold or mildew in the rooms. We spoke with 5 other guests - same problem. The message on the thermostat said "time to change the filter". Refrigerators in some room had a foul odor. Staff denied any smell.
William was fantastic! I accidentally called a third party to book instead of the front desk, and when I received my confirmation, they had made a mistake on the number of people. My mistake was not William's problem, but he took the time needed anyway to give me several options and thoroughly explain everything. In the end, he found us a room that would work for our needs. If you call the front desk, ask for William- Awesome individual!
We have stayed in this property multiple times. Sadly this will be the last. The staff was very rude and acted like we weren’t welcome, the room was musty due t the cheaply installed mini split, the bed sheets were damp because of the extra humidity, heavy glass shower door wouldn’t hardly move, furniture in room needs replaced, etc. This is not the IHG you are used to. This place is soon to be just another days inn. My advice is pay $20 more a night and stay at another property in the area. This is my last stay here.
Our room was clean and comfortable enough, but we had no hot water for our morning showers. We tried at 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. so there should have been plenty of hot water then. We reported the problem to the front desk, and the desk assistant told us that occurs because the kitchen is using hot water in preparation of breakfast. That’s unacceptable and should be corrected.
I would not return. The AC is not effective, and I could not get the tiny AC unit to cool the room below 73 degrees. I need to sleep in a room no warmer than 68. They can to my room to fix it and made me wait another hour to switch rooms, all the while the temp in my room was climbing to 75, which due to medical conditions, I cannot tolerate. Finally I went downstairs to politely ask for keys to a new room, and it was at 73. An hour later, it is still at 73. This is ridiculous that I am paying $160ish a night for a room that I cannot be comfortable in. It is only 80 degrees outside. There is no reason why a hotel cannot provide adequate climate control for their guests. I travel a LOT, and a few times I have switched rooms due to AC problems, but it was always resolved. This is not. Also, in the shower in 423, there is literally a HOLE in the shower floor exposing the concrete backer board or something. It looks awful and feels gross on your feet. I also had peeling paint from the shower floor sticking to my feet. It was a very unpleasant experience. Yet, through all of this, I have remained very polite as I know it is not the desk staff’s fault that the hotel is in such bad shape. Stay elsewhere!

Beautiful park in a safe neighborhood with a trail that circles the whole park. The playground is in good condition. Two big shelters to rent, restroom, rose garden, multiple lights along the trail for a well lit night.
Sushi is great everytime & great price too! I typically don't like eating at restaurant due to cleanliness, lack of service or loud atmosphere - but I will eat in at Oishi! It's great. Plenty of seating. Good lightning, low noise level. Highly recomm
