Hilo Medical Center: Emergency Room - Emergency room in Hilo - 1190 Waianuenue Ave, USA

This place was amazing Was seen right away, they were so kind and had wonderful bedside manner. I felt safe and taken care of. First I was just shocked that I actually had a good experience at a hospital in the first place but second they helped reassure me and turned the lights off to keep me calm and checked in on me frequently. They explained things they found in a clear way that I understood and I left feeling like they really cared about me as a person

Our nurse was Adam. Adam was amazing. Progessional and friendly. I am only giving 4 stars because the hospital needs some updates and add more comfort for patients and caregiver.

Two stars for each of the 2/3 ER doctors I’ve had that were rude and demeaning. Other than those two, the rest of the staff has been helpful and pleasant to work with. Just be aware that the doctors themselves might have aggressive egos that they make your problem.

I had brought my 87 year old husband down to the emergency room because he was having trouble with his pulse and he was having some breathing issues. Our primary care doctor told us to tell them that my husband needed a CT Scan of his lungs so we proceeded to tell them that when all of sudden they started testing him for the flu and Covid. Then Dr Rowland came in and told us that he has the flu when he doesn’t have any symptoms. I had asked them to retest him but they said no. Dr Rowland was not very nice. We asked them what they were going to do and are they going to give him anything for the flu. These stupid people in the emergency room did not give my husband anything for what they diagnosed him with and we were in the emergency room for almost 7 hours and only saw Dr Rowland in the beginning and that was it. They did do the CT scan on him after I made such a fuss about. that is what we actually came in for besides for his pulse being low. They also put a heart monitor on him and started a Iv on him and one of the leads came off and the monitor was beeping for hours until I went out to the desk and told them that the monitor is beeping and they said that they would be right in. They came in a half an hour later. Hilo Hospital Emergency Room sucks. They diagnosed my husband wrong and Dr Rowland needs to be reported for misdiagnosing my husband and for not checking on him while we were there. We don’t recommend going to Hilo Medical Center emergency room because Dr Rowland and her staff did not take care of us while we were there on February 17th.

The staff here is excellent! We had to make an unfortunate trip to the ER while visiting the island. Very quick and friendly care allowed us to continue with our plans. We appreciate the care!

Iv never felt more helpless in my entire life. I’m 35 and Been going through health problems for 2 years now they just keep discharging me and never actually doing anything but charging me a ridiculous price. I don’t think they realize any suicides on this island is because of them and not actually helping people with there health problems. They need to just give up on there jobs and let someone that knows what there doing come in or start sending people to Oahu or mainland! I clearly have to move back to mainland to get real help!

The staff at HMC ER were amazing! I arrived early in the morning with difficulty breathing. Everyone was transparent about who I would see next and why (shift changes, specialist, etc.) and how long processes would take. They brought warm blankets and a heat pad when I noted I was cold. They were a step ahead in all regards and provided thorough and kind treatment. I am very grateful to all the staff for their patience and care!! Māhalo!

My wife started having severe pain in her kidney at noon on a recent Saturday. We went to UrgentCare near Hilo, and they took two minutes to decide she needed an ER, stat. We arrived at Hilo ER, and received instant and competent care. The entire staff was excellent; caring competent, and thorough. They did have to run two CT scans, so we were there about six hours. Never did they leave us alone for long wondering what was going on. Fortunately, she did not have to have surgery. If you HAVE to visit an ER, I hope the one you go to is as good as this one.Mahalo nui loa to all the people there. So appreciated their help.
