HI San Francisco Downtown Hostel - Featured Reviews (1590)
I stayed for 10 days and the experience is the value more than the bed and breakfast.
Easy to find restaurants and close to cable car station.
Hostel activities are even more fun. You have a place to keep your luggage after you checkout if your flights are late in the evening or night. Very friendly staffs.
This place is really friendly, and very clean! The location is amazing, close to every public means of transportation, and great places to eat. There is a breakfast provided but it's very basic (bread, fruit, tea, average coffee), however the dining space is nice. We had a private room with a bunk bed, and bathrooms shared with the floor. Bathrooms were always super clean. The bedroom was small as expected, but the beds were good. Only downside is that there was a strange smell in the room the whole time we stayed, which is now lingering on all of our stuff and clothes. Would stay again, but hopefully in another room!
Good hostel. Except for the two ladies, who were nice, the receptionists need to more friendly. Oh my god I felt as if the guys were offering the room for free. Not a single smile or welcoming word. I rated it five stars anyways because the room was clean and the place was cool
I stayed in a Men's 4-Bed Dorm room. The hostel is historical and beautifully decorated, and does not look run-down. There is an old-style elevator that you may enjoy riding, but the stairs are so beautiful that I ended up just walking up and down them every day. The dorm room is pretty spacious, with a sink and mirror, so you can conveniently brush your teeth and wash your hands in your room. Your locker will be below the bunk bed and is quite large, but since you have to pull it all the way out to open the lid, it is not very convenient. I would prefer to see the hostel install tall lockers inside the room. The bed is fairly comfortable, although it doesn't have curtains installed, so others will be able to see you sleep.
The hostel provides a pretty good breakfast – toasts, hard-boiled eggs, oatmeal, fruit, and coffee/tea. It also offers regular weekday and weekend activities. The kitchen feels communal, and the common room on the second floor is often full of people. It will not be difficult for you to make new friends here.
The hostel is located in a very convenient location – just a few minutes' walk from Powell Street station, from which you can either take BART or Muni. Many tourist spots are within walking distance, such as the famous San Francisco cable car, Chinatown, and Union Square. Other popular tourist destinations, such as SFMOMA, the Asian Art Museum, Japantown, and Fisherman's Wharf, are all nearby and can be easily reached by public transportation.
Given the convenient location and the relatively low cost of staying in downtown San Francisco, I would recommend this hostel to everyone.
1 star for being inaccessible. If you have mobility issues or use anything on wheels, stay away. It’s a lift and not an elevator and no, the staff will not get up to hold the doors open for you when they see you struggling. ADA bathrooms were also labeled as regular bathrooms so if you are a chair user you will never get to use the accessible bathroom bc able bodies are always in there. Don’t bother. The low cost does not outweigh the hassle.
This is my first stay at a hostel. I booked a private room for myself because I knew I would not be able to sleep in a dorm situation.
I typically stay in mid to upper level hotels when I travel, so this was a first for me, branching out, to experience other ways to spend the night in a city.
This facility met and also exceeded my expectations. My room was perfectly fine, it was extremely clean, the sheets smelled so good. This hostel is in a very old building, and you can feel that old building funkiness as you walk around. It isn't a bad thing. But is this a Holiday Inn Express or the Nikko? No way, but that's okay, it is very good for what it is. It is loud, you are on a very busy street, you will want ear plugs.
The location is on the edge of where things get sketchy, but the good news is, you don't have to go there. You can walk around and go to other blocks to get to where you're going. As a single woman, I never felt unsafe.
It is a short walk to all transportation, restaurants, sightseeing, and helps you stay within your budget if that is your priority.
I would stay here again and would recommend it to anyone looking for this type of experience.
Great location, very close to Union Square. It's also a great location because of its proximity to bus lines and BART. It is an old hotel and a little dated but the price is right. Free breakfast in the morning. There is an elevator at this hostel.
