What an amazing little place! Especially if you like history! The workers were extremely knowledgeable about the artifacts in the room. Very neat experience!

10/10 place to grab some drinks as you go on your day. At the heart of Jack London and full of history.

Do not miss the opportunity to experience the history in a lovely setting! We took the ferry from SF and it was just a short walk in Jack London Square to reach our destination. We appreciated being about to bring in food to enjoy with our drinks! Do not miss the one!

Quirky, kooky little waterside bar with an unexpectedly interesting history. Good selection of craft beers, and their bloody mary is pretty excellent.

We went in for drinks and enjoyed the atmosphere and history! I really enjoyed that the bartender was very knowledgeable on the history of the bar and the area. It was so cool to hear the stories about the bar. The drinks were fantastic, I had a Moscow mule. Definitely recommend a visit if you like local American history and good drinks!

I stepped into Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon and felt like I had stepped back in time. The saloon is a small, two-story building with a wood-paneled interior. The walls are lined with maritime artifacts, including ship models, figureheads, and nautical charts. There is also a collection of Jack London memorabilia, including photos, letters, and first editions of his books. The saloon's bar is made from a redwood stump, and it is said that the stump was used as a chopping block by the Chinese laborers who built the nearby railroad. The bar also features a large mirror that is said to be haunted by the ghost of Jack London. I ordered a beer and took a seat at the bar. As I sipped my beer, I looked around the saloon and felt a sense of history. I could imagine the sailors and adventurers who had once frequented this saloon, and I could almost hear the echoes of their laughter and conversation. I thought about Jack London, who had spent many hours in this saloon. I imagined him sitting at the bar, writing in his journal or telling stories to his friends. I felt a sense of connection to him, and I was grateful to have the opportunity to experience a place that had been so important to his life. Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon is a special place. It is a place where you can step back in time and experience a piece of Oakland's history. It is a place where you can feel the spirit of Jack London and the people who have come before you. If you are looking for a unique and sentimental bar experience, I highly recommend visiting Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon. It is a place that you will never forget.

Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon in 1958. Heinold's opened in 1884 and is one of the oldest bars in Oakland. The building survived the 1906 earthquake and still retains much of its original character. One of the most famous patrons of Heinold's was author Jack London. He would go there to study and write. The tilted floors are said to have inspired the crooked gambling house described in London's short story "The Golden Poppy." Heinold's is a designated Oakland local landmark and is also on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon is not only a piece of Oakland's history but also a living testament to the city's past. It offers a glimpse into the Old West and the literary history of the area, making it a popular destination for history enthusiasts and those looking for a unique, nostalgic bar experience.

The downward slant in the flooring and the portside list of the bar really add to the quaint atmosphere. Bartenders are very friendly and full of knowledge that they're willing to share - historical knowledge about the business, and in the finer arts of drinkmaking. Definitely a cost-effective place to get your drink on.
