Precautions: The guided tour was kind of crowded and rushy. You need to choose between taking photos or listening to the tour guide because there's no time for both. No bathroom break during the tour up hill. And the bathrooms down hill were not working too. The castle was a leisure place for its owner at its glamorous days. The general public can have a peek at how the richs live.
Beautiful architecture. The castle is vast, so it felt a bit more like a sneak peak, and we wished we could have seen more. Our tour guide was clearly very knowledgeable, and went in depth with history. I recommend spending some time in the visitors center before the actual tour!
It's such an incredible place. The house is stunning, of course, but the grounds are the big draw for me! The Neptune pool, wow, I want to have a pool party! It only costs $1500 for a 2 hour catered party, lol, a little out of my range, but if I ever win the lottery! We visited while it was decorated for Christmas. It is an interesting look at how the super wealthy live. I visited 10 years ago, and you were able to take a tour, then you could wander around the grounds as long as you wanted. Unfortunately, Covid put a halt to that. The tour lasted about 75 minutes, not including the bus ride.
The history of the property, owner, and architect is amazing. The grounds and home are unbelievable. We really enjoyed the tours. If you've got the time and you really enjoy this kind of history/museum take a couple consecutive tours in the same day. The visitor center staff or website can help you decide which tour suits your interests and time management. The earliest tours are the best because there are fewer guests, the guides are fresh, and the sunlight is better for pics. Enjoy!
Wow! Beautiful place with lots to see. We did the pool/castle tour but would love to go see the rooms. Our guide was nice and informative. It was a beautiful day to go there for sure! Our bus left RIGHT on time, so you have to be atleast 15 minutes early because they board and leave at that time! Luckily we got on the next one (freeway was closed and we got there RIGHT at 2:20pm but it already left.)
I didn't know much about the Hearst family before we went, and it was a much more impressive and interesting tour than I'd expected. The bus ride up to the hill top was interesting and very beautiful, with amazing views. We took the Grand Rooms tour which was about 90 minutes, 2 hours with the bus ride. The guide was pretty good and we really enjoyed seeing it all.
I visited here as a kid long ago, and it changed the way I think about wealth. I came again as an adult, and I was not disappointed. Absolutely gorgeous. Went on two tours, and unfortunately it rained pretty hard on the second, but it gave me the opportunity to take some amazing pictures.
First time back as an adult and it's just as awesome as I remember. Did the 5 room tour and still got to see both the indoor and outdoor pool, though the outdoor pool was rushed due to the time they commit to this tour. Was a 70 minute tour, but total time spent was 1 hours 50 minutes.
