Fantastic trails and views! I will say some of the paths marked as difficult are a tad slippery in some spots, but the views and fall colors are fantastic 👌
One of my favorite free hikes. I would say this is an easy to moderate hike, depending on your fitness level as there is incline and it can get rocky. It took about an hour from start to finish.
24,589 days on this earth with countless trips to and through Red Wing, MN, and I'd never hiked the fabulous He Mni Can/Barn Bluff Trail to the top with panoramic views of the city and Mississippi River. So glad I did. The changing sumac were whispering that autumn is just around the corner. 🍂 "Firsts are best because they offer new beginnings."
Trails of 3 different difficulties. Pick the one fit to your challenge. It's a great time to enjoy the fall colors now!
Barn bluff is the crown jewel of Red Wing. Best to go during the week as it is pretty busy during the weekends in summer and fall.
If you like walking and sweating with some surprisingly scenic spots, you may want to take the South or Quarry Trails. North Trail is considered a bit tough and risky due to the terrain and steeper slopes. From the West Outlook (I would recommend taking South Trail), you can see the whole town. The view is worth walking. Quarry Trail takes you more along the Mississippi River. The reason for the 3-star rating vs. 4.5-5 star rating is the safety issue. When you take South Trail and reach the West Outlook, the stairs shown on the map to come down, ends abruptly half way with a sign on the tree telling you to go to North Trail (which you should not); instead go back go back to the East entrance using South Trail One plate on the tree also tells you that there are no stairs anymore as they got deteriorated. The issue is that visitors can have different health conditions, including heart condition. They may be prepared for .66 miles walk but not conditioned to go to North Trail or walk all the way back to the East Outlook to come down. If the stairs on the West Outlook do not exist anymore, then the map at the East entrance should be updated and clear big signs mentioning that there are no stairs at the West Outlook and the visitors should plan their trip based on walking back to the East parking lot. It would be nice to have make-shift toilets in the parking lot and drinking water stations to fill water bottles. People can get dehydrated. #Redwing #BarnBluff #Minnesota #travel #photography
Great hike! Lots of steps and broke a great sweat. The Tree up top was awesome. Great views also.
Date of Visit: 11.18.2023 - Phenomenal adventure for the afternoon! Be prepared for incredible elevation changes & rocky terrain with big roots. Certain areas of trail are closed in the winter. We saw a few folks rock climbing. One porta potty near the parking lot was all we saw for restroom availability.

A really nice place. Nice little coffee shop. Quaint. Carpeting gives a nice warm feeling in November. Fun book exchange for the locals. This would be a great place to work remotely.
