Handcar Tours - Featured Reviews (112)
We went on Saturday, December 16, 2023. A rare opportunity and a new way to enjoy the coastal views! We saw a local news story and checked it out because locals usually don't do tourist stuff. Electric assist pedaling was super easy and staff very nice. Apparently 2 cars can be connected if you're in a group but we appreciated that they left space between groups. Fun but not cheap. We recommend it!
It was our first time, and it was awesome! We have a wonderful 😊 ❤️ fun day. I highly recommend to everyone of all ages ( kids of course with adults supervision), all worth it driving to this awesomeness HANDCAR TOURS. The folks who works here are knowledgeable, super friendly, and awesome, especially Mason and his Mom. You guys Rock!!!
Wow! If you are visiting the Monterey area, You NEED to do this! My wife and I did a Friday morning tour ($10 off on Fridays). What a great experience! We did the electric assist tour for two, and it was much easier than we expected it to be. All said we did about 45 minutes of actual biking and there is a small break in the middle which is when the track is closest to the ocean for a cool view. The business is family owned, the owner gave the welcome and safety brief. It's clear they are very passionate about this and it really helped to make the experience fun! We will be back in a few weeks to bring some visiting family. The only down fall is that children need to be five and older for the electric bikes and ten and older for the manual hand carts. It would be cool if they add a children seat in the back to allow little ones to enjoy it. All said, it was a very cool experience and we are glad we did it. Well worth the money!
Edit: Came back a few weeks later with family to try the hand cars. We really enjoyed the hand cars, definitely better than the bike cars but it's a close call, so I recommend both. My mom, my sister and myself were able to do the hand car. The first hill was the hardest part and after that we were able to get cruising. It was a lot of fun and our calves and arms are sore the next day but we got the cart moving pretty fast. We really enjoy it and enjoy talking with the staff who are all family members and are quite passionate about what they do! We will be back with other family members and friends. Thank you!
I saw an ad for this on Instagram and decided to give it a try. It's an interesting concept to enjoy the view along the coast.
People working there were very friendly and knowledgeable of the cars. This is a family business. The owner's son is the own that designed the cars and they build all the cars themselves. They said it cost them $29,000 to build an electric car. The hand cars were created first. A hand car can hold up to 4 people, you have to use your arms/hands to drive it. The electric cars were added very recently and only 2 people can occupy it. You use your legs to pedal it
We reserved an electric car and I'm glad we did because I don't like the arm motion of the hand car. I much prefer pedalling. You don't have to pedal much because it's electric assisted. I enjoyed the ride but it felt quite short. I wished it was longer and there was less waiting/idle time.
Support small business!!
A must explore cool experience. Super friendly staff and guidance. On time and the overall experience is very new and engaging with great views. I did the electric assist so not that hard for two people.
What a great experience!! I saw this on Tiktok and took my 70yr old parents who were visiting to do this. We rented two electric carts. I was scared my parents were going to be unable to push the pedals but they did just fine since there was an electric assist (someone needs to continuously pedal lightly for it to work). My dad has 2 replaced knees and pedalling was not an issue and he had no pain afterwards.
They also have a hand push cart that can hold 4 passengers. It looked like a lot of work. If you want a workout go for this option.
Book online the reservations - we were able to book the same day (but they do fill up quickly). It's a loop around the unused train tracks 3 miles out and 3 miles back. The view at the top is very beautiful.
VERY friendly/personable family owned & run business. They have fairly high overhead w/ $30k+ cost per custom built power assist bike/peddle car and $10k per month site lease and they commute in every weekend from LA area and have only been in business a year, delayed opening by the pandemic... So keep these factors in mind when considering the slightly steep price starting at $150 per CART (not per person... 2 on peddle cars, 4 on hand carts. A single person could do the right side of peddle car solo).
1.5 HR tour through beautiful ocean front State Park.
Alternatively, Park is also bikable, hikable with what appeared to be well maintained bike/pedestrian paved trails running most parallel to railline. But the unique experience of Handcar tours is worth the price at least once... over a bike rental.
Must make reservations in advance. (But on a September Friday after Labor Day, I was able to make a same day reservation, the morning of).
If you have a couple of hours to spare in Monterey, definitely book a time slot to go on these updated train carts. They have electrical assist and it does help getting up the minor hills. Mason and family are awesome and definitely recommend this experience.

My friends and I did the hike to the top of the Badger hiking trail within Fort Ord National Monument, it offered beautiful views of the Salinas Valley, the trail is steep in areas, make sure to wear proper shoes and stay hydrated. There is a free pa
We are in state for Thanksgiving. There was a lull day and my wife and I wanted to see a west coast sunset.
Highly recommend this location
Not to busy and beautiful at sunset.
Every time I come I tell myself I'll try new things, but then end up getting the wings, fried pickles, and barts tots... No regrets ha. Their wings are my all-time favorite... So deliciously crispy𤤠always met with friendly service, highly recomme
A nice, cozy place, nice outdoor sitting, quiet, singing birds, relaxing music. The food is great, as well as the service. I had Eggs Benedicts on smoked salmon and a side order of bacon. Definitely will be there again. Right after the great food I w

This is an excellent spot. Got to this place via a random search on my way back from Carmel. The people serving here are super nice. Made us feel instantly comfy even with a new born in a stroller. Food was super good. Fast service. Crab fried rice i
Most of the things I love to eat are here, love the fresh seafood catch on certain days but you have to be there as soon as it opens or you'll run out. They also get fresh baked goods and bread delivered on certain days as well. Prices are good not t
