I was really nervous to stay here due to all of the negative reviews. It ended up being way better than we thought. The room could have used a deep clean for the hard to get spots but definitely wasn't dirty or filled with bugs like other posts said. We had a room on floor 12 and the view was great. We had a few meals here and they were all good. Bartenders were friendly. I do think a good paint job would go a long way with making this place really nice. As well as more kid friendly activities on property. The pool was very small but nice. All of the staff we talked to were friendly. I do wish the ocean view rooms had sliding doors that opened. Even if there were bars once you opened it because of no balcony. Being able to hear the ocean at night would have been great. Overall it was a good stay.

This was our second trip to the Gran Naniloa and we cherished the relaxing stay. |Last year we were there to celebrate a landmark bd for myself and this year to celebrate a landmark BD for my husband. We could not have been happier to return to this beautifully located hotel with views of Hilo Bay with all its activities: sail boats, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, incoming cruise ships and viewing small aircraft coming in and out of the Hilo airport. From our lanai we could also see Coconut Island and the tranquil grounds of the hotel including a string of tiki torches which were lit up each evening.|The Front Desk agents were amazing. Special shout outs to Sierra, Megan and Reiko for all their attentive service.|The Lobby Bar is where you can totally unwind with views of the bay again and with the best team of bartenders we have ever encountered: Rye, Scott and Robert. If synchronized bar tending were an Olympic Sport, they would be Gold Medal winners. Loved the locally based entertainment, particularly enjoyed Daylan Tiogangco with the “Indigenous One” whose group included outstanding musicians. Included was some fun hula dancing that the audience was encouraged to participate in. It was lovely.|We did miss Daryll Castillo in the musical line-up who we heard and enjoyed so much last year. |Valet and Housekeeping were friendly and efficient and we enjoyed breakfast each morning at the restaurant Ka Lihikai , which was formerly Hula Hulas.|A very memorable stay!

It was fine. Really closer to 3.5 stars, just not enough to bump it up to 4. Everyone we interacted with was super friendly. The room was generally pretty comfortable. Everything was just a little outdated for the money. For example, the sliding door to the bathroom kept falling off its track, making it very difficult to slide open and closed. At one point, the elevator went to our floor and then just didn’t open. In a vacuum, these are just minor inconveniences, but they’re the sorts of things I’d expect from a much cheaper hotel. It’s also a little frustrating that you’re required to use the valet parking for $25/night, despite the rather large parking lot across the street. Overall, it’s just fine. I’m not necessarily unhappy with my stay, just not particularly blown away considering the price. I’d probably stay here again, just armed with the knowledge that prices in Hawaii are way out of wack and that, by Hawaiian standards, this is basically a budget resort at a budget price.

Location, Location, Location! There is a friendly staff, with new management that is very responsive. The updates are continuing. We walked into town, and to other nearby attractions. Valet team is excellent, but it's a short walk for self-parking. Lots of outdoor seating for enjoying morning coffee. No beach but we walked along the lava and walkways and enjoyed the sounds of the surf hitting the lava. |Good Enough to say, we will return!

Reasonable base for my four-day visit to the Big Island and managed to do plenty of exploration from the north-west to south-east of the island in my rental car. Valet parking is available at $25 per day, otherwise the option is street parking, which was easy to find every evening except Saturday, when there was an event at the hotel. Generally, the neighbourhood felt safe for parking my car on the street (or my plain rental car attracted no attention!). Beautiful views, nice artwork around the hotel and friendly staff. Complimentary cocktails pack a punch and do not lack alcohol but I only got through two of the eight vouchers! Room was spacious and in good repair. In-room coffee machine was faulty but, ultimately, unnecessary as complimentary coffee was available all day in the lobby. My flight was at 22:00 and, while I was reassured at check-in when I enquired that extended check-out would be no problem, I was only offered an hour's extension to 12:00, which was disappointing given the hotel was not particularly busy. There was certainly no bending over backwards to go the extra mile for guests which, in my opinion, sets apart the very best hotels from the rest. Still, after check-out, I was able to remain on the hotel grounds and spend my last few hours on the Big Island soaking up the sun and some beautiful views from the garden, which was no bad thing as can be seen from the stunning photos!

Other than a minor miscommunication regarding housekeeping services upfront, had a really great stay. Staff were very friendly and the hotel vibes were awesome. Nightly live music and hula dancing. Stay comes with complimentary drink tickets and snorkels. Restaurant and bar also had good food and drinks. Located right on the ocean with gorgeous views. Hands down the nicest place to stay in Hilo.

dirty and full of local people. they arrive around 8:30 am and leave around 11 pm. they scream, use the mini pool, play soccer, use the little space that have lounge chairs. It’s so weird and disturbing that the hotel had to turn off the beautiful torches that light the paths because of them. this is not my first time in hilo but certainly my last. this is not a hilton class hotel, it’s an hotel for poor people who live in hilo. Also, the hotel is surrounded by 2 old hotels that are now for homeless people. I asked for plates and forks to eat in my room at the restaurant and it was a difficult task because local people steal everything (what both barmen told me) They always wanted to give me cardboard and plastic. I stayed 2 nights, and they forgot to make my room. I left at 9am and came back around 3am and still not done. I had to call and on top of that my room card no longer worked. I have traveled all over the world and other places in Hawaii and I have never seen such poor service. The hotel is at best a 1.5 star.

My wife and I stayed here for four nights as part of a conference. From my two-star ranting, I would typically not recommend this hotel. However, I will not a few positive aspects: this is a full service hotel, on the water, in Hawaii, and most rooms, even the cheaper ones have water views. Like many resorts on the Big Island, there is no beach, but they have a nice little access area with a pool-like ladder into the ocean were you can soak under the shade of a few large trees, as lovers of Hawaii that also hide from the sun, this was perfect. The staff was friendly and helpful. Food at the restaurant was good, although shockingly expensive. We’ve stayed in Kona several times and while we love it, the places there can feel a little generic, Hilo side is a bit more homey and low key - people live here, not just vacation here. BUT, the property is in bad shape. The pealing paint on the building is noticeable as soon as you arrive. The walls in the rooms and many hallways are in desperate need of paint as well. Rooms are sparse. Some rooms have upgraded, recent baths, but others reflect a bad remodel from the past (we had two rooms on our stay) where to get into the shower you need to climb over a nearly 2 foot ledge that surrounds the older tub. And you can’t take a bath because the spigot to fill the tub was removed (shower only). Both out rooms also lacked shear curtains (black out only). When asked, we were told this was normal, but the double track system in both rooms indicates this was a decision made by the property owners. Our view of the ocean was spoiled by windows that appears to not have been cleaned on the outside for years. These are not major investments, fresh paint, new curtains, and clean window! But they would have made a huge difference in how we felt about the place. If the upgraded bath we saw is an indication of ongoing improvements, this could be a nice property in the future, I just cannot recommend it now.
