Legend has it, during the 1860’s a great fisherman / clammer named Gill Burch lived by where Gilgo beach is now. He was so great that if you wanted a good catch, you go where “Gill goes”. And so, the beach was named Gil-go. Beware of the serial killer that has been dumping bodies near by. These cases are still a mystery. $40 Friday to Sunday (holidays) and $20 Monday to Thursday from 8am to 8pm for parking. Credit card only. Free for residents with a permit. Those holding a 4x4 fishing / surfing permit may drive their truck on the beach (get there early because spaces fill up quick). This is also a great place to surf and body board. The waves can get strong at times and you can get dragged into the ocean if you are not careful. Once you get in the water, the sand drops off quickly. Make sure you know how to swim before getting in. There is a restaurant named Gilgo Inn serving drinks, food and snacks. There are also showers, restrooms and a boating dock. Is this beach better than Jones beach or Robert Moses that charges $10 for parking? It depends. If you want to surf, then maybe yes. But $40 is expensive for what you get. The beach is short and the sand has shells. However, the waves are great for surfing and it doesn’t get that crowded. Overall, this beach okay. It felt safe, clean and friendly. But, they charge a steep price for admission.
Good beach with a variety of ocean experiences: big waves, no waves. You never know what experience to get. The beach bar is operated by bunch of young folks who don’t care note they know how to run a successful bar. It is what it is.
Besides the fact someone people got murdered here 20 years ago, great place to do the polar bear plunge
Our favorite beach in the town of Babylon! The beach is clean and quiet. Great to relax and get a tan. Prices at the restaurant are reasonable.
Great people, great staff, amazing beach! Lifeguards on duty until 7pm and good security after dusk.
One of my favorite summer time places the 4x4 beach access pass is the way to go !
Some footage of waves brought by hurricane Lee
