If you are looking for an afternoon event, come to the Gilbert Museum. A collection of American Art. The visiting shows are constantly changing. The site also features a working grist mill. There are also trails which lead to a small pond will be of interest to anyone looking for a place to take an afternoon hike.
We came with our four year-old and 18-month old, figuring that it would be a pretty little pit stop. Well, it was a ton more than that, and our tour guide - a retired engineer - talked our rapt four year-old through the inner workings of every part of each water wheel, down to the individual gears. We stayed for hours and he came back bubbling with knowledge, telling me about "over shot" and "under shot" water wheels, and which one was more efficient and why. He was so excited we went back two days later, when the executive director started a tour late for us, and went out of her way to show us things we hadn't seen on our first visit. She even let our four year-old open and close the water gate (starting and stopping the wheel) which, if the last 24 hours is any indication, he's going to be talking about for years! Incredibly warm, knowledgeable, wonderful staff. Would recommend unreservedly.
Beautiful place to walk around, and see some of Rhode Island history.
Hidden gem that had not been found for years by us! Great visit with art, history and beautiful grounds. Go!
An interesting part of Rhode Island History. The Gilbert Stuart Birthplace & Museum offers information on Gilbert Stuart and a unique history of the property itself as it went through various stages of restoration and ownership.
The home was the first Snuff Mill in New England and has since been recreated with power wheels along Pettaquamscutt River. You will also find the room where Gilbert Stuart was born, view reproductions of his works, and learn about how he came to be a portraitist along with Stuart family history.
Also located on the property are the Hammond Gristmill, Visitor Center, and more. The Hammond Gristmill has been restored to its original purpose of grinding corn for Rhode Island Johnnycakes while the Visitor Center offers a gift shop and art gallery to view a variety of paintings. You will also find a nature trail that takes you along Carr Pond and to famous historic cemeteries, a fish ladder that assists with helping Red Herring, and an herb garden.
You can take a guided or self-guided tour of the property and I would recommend visiting on a sunny day to enjoy all the property has to offer.
Wonderful, historic birthplace of Gilbert Stuart, a prolific portrait artist who painted 6 sitting Presidents and much more. Dave, our guide, gives a very informative tour, nearly an hour long....fantastic for a $10 admission fee! The grounds are green and peaceful and you can wander some trails on your own if you wish. My elderly parents also enjoyed it!
An enchanting location in New England. An historical site. The drive to get to this place is very enjoyable especially if you love long New England drives. This is a seasonal place it is open during the summer months.
