There’s a lot to take in at Forest Lawn but one should definitely stop by the museum. There’s a modest collection of fantastic sculptures, statues and statuettes. Be sure to wander the grounds behind the museum for the best view of Glendale and some more beautiful artwork
Cela fait deux fois que je visite ce petit musée qui propose des expositions fort intéressantes.
More than a cemetery! Lived in L.A. for most of my life but never knew of the museum they have on-site. Changing exhibits keeps the place fresh (look at their web page for current exhibits). Don't forget to check out the gigantic mural by Polish artist Styka.
This little museum was delightful. On the day we visited, there was a special display over two rooms, of Bob Baker's marionettes. The lady in the gift shop told us there would be a new display next month. In the front part of the museum are some really beautiful bronze statues, sculptures and paintings - all of which we loved. Each exhibit is accompanied by interesting background information. There's also a lovely gift shop. Admission to the museum is free.
i wasn't expecting much when i noticed that this museum was part of the cemetery but my mind quickly changed once we made it to the top of the hill and saw the chapel and building next to it. we were lucky to visit on a very peaceful and slow day with not much foot traffic so much of the small viewing areas were empty. it is very small and only 3 small sections but i highly suggest setting aside an hour from your day plans and visit to see some of the statues on display. we even said we'd like to return in a few months or a year to see a new exhibit or something else they might add.
I come here on Good Friday every year to meditate, pray and observe. The crucifixion painting is breathtaking (& massive). Its so peaceful and serene here. There’s no place like it (near by). I would have to make a trip to Mater Dolorosa (Sierra Madre) or Serra Retreat in Malibu to find a serene spot to meditate and pray. I love the exhibition and the ambiance. You also get a beautiful view of the city!
For those who need a break from hectic city life, I recommend you take a break here.
This was my second visit to the painting. The updated prelude narration video was very informative !
Forest Lawn Museum's Hall of Crucifixion-Resurrection features Jan Styka's 1896 painting of the Crucifixion. Measuring 195 feet wide and 45 feet tall, it is the largest painting on the West Coast.
Beautiful small museum in Forest lawn, Glendale. Don't miss the free 18 minutes show that runs every hour showcasing two prime pieces of painting they have, The Crucifixion and The Resurrection. They are a must see and will leave one moving and breathtaking.
