Our stay at the hotel was wonderful, thanks to the exceptional staff who went above and beyond to ensure my family was well taken care of. We felt respected and welcomed throughout our visit, and our rooms were consistently cleaned each day.
One of the highlights was the availability of an onsite washer and dryer, which made it easy for us to keep our laundry fresh. The hotel also provided beach gear for guests, including towels, chairs, and even sand toys for the kids, which was a fantastic bonus.
As someone who enjoys working out, I did notice that the gym could benefit from more space, particularly a taller area for overhead exercises. However, I was still able to get a good workout in, and the presence of a gym was definitely appreciated.
Overall, we had a great experience and will certainly be returning!
Excellent location in beautiful La Jolla. Very nice and helpful staff. We stayed in the Empress suite and the room was large and well laid out with a little fridge and microwave.
I was extremely disappointed to see the amount of single use plastic used here - plastic cups in the rooms wrapped in thin plastic instead of a glass. The breakfast is shocking. All ultra processed packaged food, nothing home made and you eat off those compostable paper plates with plastic cutlery. How can they have this set up in a state that is so environmentally aware and in an upmarket town as lovely as La Jolla. Rather don't offer breakfast, it lets you down. Or put the room prices up $5 a night and get some proper cutlery, cups and glasses.
The bedding needs to be replaced - polyester and at best poly/cotton sheets and a lumpy polyester duvet.
The location and staff redeem this hotel so I do recommend it just manage your expectations
This place was located in a GREAT area, close to the beach and to the wedding venue we were there to attend. You can valet, free, but we found street parking every night. Continental breakfast was convenient and adequate, everything well stocked with constant attention by staff. This isn't the Waldorf, but the accommodations were clean & comfortable, and the staff was friendly and helpful.|Stephanie at the desk deserves a special nod as she was so helpful it had a lasting impression on my wife, and she prompted this review. Stephanie gave us awesome tips about activities and locations near the Empress and was ESPECIALLY helpful when a SNAFU we encountered needed a solution. She really helped us to relieve a VERY stressful problem (a serious last minute wardrobe malfunction) and we are grateful for her help. We will back to see beautiful La Jolla and will definitely choose the Empress again.
Expensive and really not worth it. The room and building are tired and in need of a major overhaul. The lobby is uninviting, the breakfast Buffett was rubbish. The bed was very comfortable and the people were helpful. For $300 a night and a mandatory resort fee (valet parking even though we didn’t drive). Three nights were $1200 after all fees. The location was excellent and yes the room was clean but for the price I’d stay somewhere else.
We really enjoyed the big comfy rooms but I recommend staying on a higher floor to cut down on street noise. Breakfast was good and if you want plant based milk ask a day ahead and they'll get it for you. Great location!
We really loved everything about the Empress Hotel. Wonderful staff, nice large clean rooms with a classic elegant feel. Great location in LA Jolla near the beach. Dog friendly. Free EV chargers. A good gym and a nice free breakfast! What more could you want?!
I am so in love with the Empress Hotel La Jolla! I have stayed here twice now- once with my husband and dog and once with my sister. Each time, everyone we interacted with was incredible and kind. This wonderful last stay was made even better by Josh and Megan. They were so sweet and inviting from the moment I went to check in. And to my surprise, I won “guest of the day” during this stay!! Josh and Megan seemed so genuinely happy to tell me about this and it truly made my day and my trip with my sister. The room was upgraded to a beautiful suite. This hotel is so clean and comforting. I can’t wait to stay here again :)
We have stayed at The Empress many many times over the last 20 years but sadly, this stay was our last. It has always been our go to hotel when visiting La Jolla. In terms of location, it's perfect.|Parking is not usually an issue and valet parking is available. We enjoyed pleasant customer service.|However, the hotel interior needs major attention.|Every room needs a complete renovation. Hallway and room carpets are old and dirty, bathroom doors are louvered and provide no privacy or sound barrier, you can hear everything that happens in the bathroom. Our sink did not drain and smelled foul, shower had inconsistent water pressure with barely a stream at times, water was never hot just warm. I suspect this hotel has some major plumbing issues. The ironing board in our room fell apart when I removed it from the closet and I could not get another in a timely manner. In addition, the lobby bathrooms were not clean, no soap or paper towels. We had 2 rooms and ended up checking out 2 days early to stay elsewhere. Very disappointing and a shame that the interior has not been kept up or improved through the years.
