This is a beautiful island. It is great for snorkeling, swimming, shelling, and exploration. There are many fort structures to explore with historical plaques for detail. It was a great adventure. It’s about a 45 minute boat ride from Gulfport. You can also see turtles and their nests.
This island is wonderful to visit. It gets realllllly hot in the peak summer months so bring shoes that guard your feet from the burning hot sand if you plan to walk the island rather than just swim. There is a lot of history on the island and the trails are lined with informational signs and images of historical ruins. There are also a ton of gopher tortoises to see. We took the Pelican Ferry from the St. Pete pier which was a really nice trip and staff was amazing. Once on the island we only had a little under 2 hours and we found it wasn't enough to snorkel AND do all the trails, so if you do something with a similar time frame I'd recommend picking ahead of time what you want to do, or, visit via private boat and give yourself a little more time. If you don't like the heat and full sun, there are picnic tables throughout the island under trees and in full shade. There is no restroom on the island, and be sure to pack out anything you bring in as there are also no waste bins.
Amazing island, available by Ferry. Historical sites right at your fingertips and tons of wild life. When you're tired of walking around the island you can chill on the beaches edge and relax and enjoy the sunny weather while watching all the boats ride by. This is an amazing day trip to embark on. Definitely enjoyed seeing the lighthouse up close.
For fans of history a very good place, my wife didn't like it, I loved it. You have to imagine what was there, there is not much left.
Very beautiful. The tortoises and bird life was amazing. Fascinating history on the fort. The old roads were all brick. The lighthouse was whitewashed brick.

Great island! Only accessible by ferry from Fort de Soto. Two gorgeous beaches, some great trails, an old fort and a ghost town means fun for the whole family. Ferry crew is super chill and friendly. Highly recommended!
Nice clear water for snorkeling. Not top far from shore you can watch boats catching tarpon! Lots of tortoises on the island and checking out the old fort was awesome! Would definitely go back!
