A beautiful place to take my young history enthusiast. We went on fine arts weekend and had a great time on the beautiful grounds, and in the houses, talking to friendly and knowledgeable staff. We will be back sometime for a regular tour, as there seems to be lots to learn about the family and the history of the area.
The Homestead was closed when I visited, as I had come to hike the trail and didn’t check on the hours. I walked around the grounds which are beautiful. I was welcomed by a very friendly cat! 😸 The cemetery was very interesting. I’ll definitely have to come back when it is open.
Our tour guide, Kathy, was so informative and excited to deliver her knowledge. She was so much fun and so kind. This made the whole experience exceed my expectations. She managed to share her wealth of knowledge about the artifacts in the home, describing the behaviors of the time period and lifestyle of individuals who lived in the homestead, while keeping the 6 children we brought interested and engaged! On short notice, she provided time period games after the tour, and spent a great amount of time showing us now they worked and made is feel so welcomed. I would return because this historic homestead had so many original artifacts, and the many classes offered for teachers cater to a particular areas of study. One could learn something new based on which experience they chose to encounter. But call ahead for this, as they need proper time to prepare and make purchases to accommodate. Thank you Kathy!!
The tour was very interesting, the artifacts were amazing, the ladies were informative and friendly. Our whole group really loved it.
We had an intern that gave us a tour of the house, the artifacts, and a detailed history of the family, the slaves that were there, Presidential affiliations, etc. She had great knowledge of all of this. The house is beautiful with an interesting collection of family possessions. We also walked the grounds to see the outbuildings which were interesting, as well as the family graveyard. It's worth the trip for sure and you can spend as much or as little time as you want. After the tour you are free to walk the property as you please.
This is a beautiful old home. We stopped to walk the trail which was quite challenging. There are some enormous old trees along the path. The trail needs some trimming back but was easy to follow. We also enjoyed seeing some rare running buffalo clover by the old family cemetery and trail head.
Used the information on here regarding hours to plan a visit but upon arrival today learned it was closed for the season. A kind and lovely lady working in the office area allowed us to walk around the homestead on our own and opened several out buildings for us to tour. A brochure provided short bios of individuals buried in the family cemetery and was particularly interesting. We are already planning our next visit during the regular season.
Beautiful home, fascinating history, unique all original furnishings and excellent tour guides. This was a spur of the moment recommendation from our Airbnb host that ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. If you're interested in stepping into the past definitely step across the threshold and into the Dinsmore Homestead, you won't be disappointed. The best $7 I spent the entire vacation.

This was an absolutely amazing experience, my 3 and 4 yr old was so pumped from begging to end. It lasted what seemed like forever (which obviously is a good thing lol), and the fact every single light danced to the music on the radio station. And ev
