Clarion Inn - Hotel in Merrillville - 7850 Rhode Island St, USA

I stayed here last weekend and it was an experience to say the least. The people were nice that were running it but overall the place was a bit of a disaster. First thing was the outside looked completely run down and nothing at all like the pictures online. Our door frame was broken before we even tried to get in to the room. The bathroom had one roll of toilet paper in it and when asked if i could have two rolls they told me no come back later. The walls were stained and the tub was stained with dirt. When asked for more towels they had us take our dirty towels to a dirty close basket behind the front desk (never had to do that ever). Couldn't get into the pool area at all because the key didn't work for it. Then, there was the outside of the building. The windows were broken, yes broken. The gate to get into the back side was also broken and there was a door that was suppose to stay locked unless you were using your room key to get in and guess what? No key needed! You could have just walked right in! On our last morning we looked outside our window and saw three people sitting on the back of their pickup truck drinking coronas at 9:45am in the morning. Come on!! If I had not already paid for this room I would have packed up our stuff and left. Please do not stay here, it was awful.

No AC in lobby at all on a 100 + degree day, outside pool was closed and covered, room was dingy looking and air was barely working on top speed. The only light that worked was bathroom and a corner wall light, the rest were burnt out, we left and canceled the rest of booking and opted to pay holiday weekend prices elsewhere.

Hotel is run down… people sitting in the parking lot drinking cases of beer and talking loudly like they were at home in their back yard. The exterior is run down… instant regret as I pulled into the drive way. When I asked about cancelling and getting a refund, I was told since we when through a 3rd party we couldn’t cancel so we decided to stay. We booked 3 days… the pool was out right filthy. Things floating in the water.. there were no towels available and it was overcrowded. The hallways were dirty and dated. 1992 at best. The room was small, the flooring was updated, the bathroom was dirty. The chair was stained, the curtains were dirty and stained. We tried to make it through the night…. But… I noticed something crawling on the bed skirt and saw it was an ant… but if you know like I do there’s never just one. I pushed the bed aside and there was an infestation of ants with left over food under the bed. We went back to the front desk to complain and the manager “Sonny” said, we can spray the room. I requested a refund rather than spray, and was told that again I couldn't be refunded. I’d have to reach out to Expedia… So I got my family the hell out of there!! As I was walking away from the counter another woman was coming t lo complain about a blood stain on the linen! So yourselves a favor don’t ever stay here. The pictures are old!! This place is run down and needs to be closed immediately!

The place doesn't have much going for it. The exterior makes you ask yourself if it really IS in business. The interior makes you ask yourself why is it still in business? Yeah, they had a pool, but they didn't take care of it. The breakfast was just pure laziness. They served eggs with no meat and cereal. They're listed as a 3-star hotel, so I expected more, but it seems far more likely that they were bought out by someone else, and it's more of a one-star experience, hence the price. THE ONLY nice thing I can say about this place was the room was clean. Not that it mattered since the mattress was so uncomfortable that my wife and I barely slept. Why? Three words. Old spring mattress. It felt like we were laying on a bouncy house than a mattress. But you get what you pay for, and what we were hoping as a sweet deal turned into a nightmare that led to us being exhausted before the day had begun. Save yourself the time. Don't go here. It's nothing personal against the business it was just overall lousy experience, and in which case, they need to try harder.

This place is truly past its prime. There are several deficiencies here. The "free breakfast" is mostly high carbohydrates. The fried eggs looked like they could have been from the Flintstone era. The pool is about the temperature of Lake Superior just after the ice has broken up. We had a staff member tells that it is because the management it too cost conscious to leave the heat turned on. When we got to our room, there was no house phone in the room. We complained loudly enough to the staff about it. When we returned, there was a phone in our room.

I got in pretty late so I didn't get the chance to do an inspection of my room like I generally do when checking in. When I woke up the next morning I noticed the bed was moved a little so I got up to move it back against the wall and saw a towel and sock behind the head of the bed. This prompted me to move the bed to remove the towel and sock. When I moved the bed I was completely mortified. It was absolutely disgusting. There was old flip flops under the bed as well as blue Takis and other debris. I started to inspect the room and noticed that there were stains on the sheet, blanket, and pillow cases I slept on. I was in a room with a double bed and noticed there was dirt on the pillows and blanket. No one slept in the room with me so the blanket and pillow were never touched. There was literally pieces of dirt on the pillows and blanket. I moved that bed and found all types of dirt ad debris under the bed. There was debris by the air conditioning unit. There was a huge stain in the skirt. The curtain was filthy. The shower curtain looked like it had smeared dirt or blood on it. The towels had pubic hairs on them and pubic hairs on the tub. I am absolutely amazed at how this hotel can operate with having a cleaning staff that is this ineffective. I would absolutely never stay at this hotel again. They should be ashamed of themselves. I was promised a call back from management regarding this issue when I filed a complaint as I was checking out but of course I received no call. I am attaching pictures so you can view for yourselves what the condition of this room was.

Listen this hotel was so bad we changed our trip and only stayed for one night, not even 24 hours. Not only was there mold growing in the A/C unit, there is goose poop everywhere on the property. The pool had things floating in it, like feathers. There is no restaurant or bar in the hotel which was stated on their amenities. We are very fortunate that we only were 60 miles from home and could leave. Please save yourself do not come here if you like yourself. Oh also there was a stain on our painting by our bed. Never once saw the house keepers with fresh sheets. I will be scrubbing myself clean for the next month.

From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warm, attentive service that made me feel right at home. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, always ready to assist with a smile.
