Four of us ate here Jan 2024. There was a little line, but not too bad. The sausage was delightful. The brisket was tough, it may have just been the particular cut we had but when walking out there were many plates with brisket still on them. The staff was friendly but a bit impatient. They wanted to move people through quickly. It was cool to be in the original place.
Flavor: B Service: A Tea: A Solo dining: A The sausage was the star of the show here. I loved it. The brisket was mediocre - not a moist melt-in-your-mouth brisket that I’d expect at a place like this. The black eyed peas were really good but the other sides I thought were nothing special. Overall I can’t say Black’s lived up to the fame, though I’d be happy to eat here if I were nearby.
Black's is a traditional barbecue place with a lot of history in the City of Lockhart and in the state of Texas. This place has hosted celebrities, politicians, and famous figures alike. The barbecue here is not too salty which in turn some may say that it needs sauce. Whether you're on the side of barbecue with sauce or without sauce the fact is the meats here are good. I really think the brisket, baby back ribs, and spare ribs all have a great taste to them. I honestly can say that it did not wow me though. It may be a little bland for some, but you can use the sauce to enjoy it however you wish. The treasure here is truly in the beef ribs. It's so tender. It's a hunk and a chunk of beef and has great flavor. I'm pretty sure it is one of the best. If not the best places to get a beef rib. One rib alone could probably feed two to three people if you include sides and other things, so just be aware when ordering. The sides were good, not anything to shout out about.
Wow! Just wow! We've been to the Black's in Austin, and it was really good. But this one in Lockhart was just amazing! All we had was the brisket and the sausage and it was the best BBQ ever! Sorry for all the exclamation points. I usually think the overuse of them is a bit tacky, but too bad, it's deserving here! The staff was super helpful and friendly, the cafeteria style lineup was very efficient. The prices and portions weren't too bad either. We were able to feed 3 adults and 3 kids on $35. We visited here on our way to our trip to Port Aransas, and are already planning on coming again on our way back to Austin. Definitely recommend Black's! You won't regret it!
This was our second stop in Lockhart for BBQ and was better than Kruez. The highlight was the Dino rib. It was tender and good, and didn’t expect that. The brisket was so so. The sides were underwhelming overall compared to other spots around Texas.
I’m in Lockhart so decided to go to the Original Black location. I’ve read about the feud so let’s see what this is all about. The line was well organized and went quickly. I only got potato salad and sliced fatty brisket. The potato salad was oddly sweet so I couldn’t eat it. Most of the brisket was great. But one side and one end was hard as a rock. Like can’t cut with the knives they had hard which meant when I picked it up with my fingers, it was dry as a bone. Sauce didn’t help. Now if I understand, the uncle also owns Kent Black’s in San Marcos. When I walk up to that one and leave that one, the smell of bbq is everywhere. Here, not so much. I would say this is on the edge of acceptable Texas barbecue.
This was the first stop we hit on our BBQ trip. We landed in Austin and drove straight here (thank goodness they open @ 10 am!) We liked the pictures and family history. They had the best selection of sides - hot & cold. Plus cobbler, corn muffins (jalapeño & plain). They slice the meat on a big chopping block by the register. Serve yourself sodas and the sweetest tea you ever had! We ordered the famous BIG beef rib - please don’t sleep on this. It’s huge and we didn’t get a beef rib like it anywhere else. We also got the brisket, jalapeño sausage, turkey and pork ribs. The other meats were good but the beef rib was the star! Loved the Mac and cheese, potato salad and 3 bean salad. We also had the slaw, beans, and sweet potatoes. The BBQ sauce reminded us of a taco sauce but the meat didn’t really need it. Would definitely go back!
Been twice. a year apart. first trip was better. I would give the food 3.5 stars if I could. Brisket 3 Ribs 4 Sausages 4 I loves looking at all the pictures and soaking up with History

We loved this little bar! The bartender Reuben, was awesome! They had a good selection of beers, including craft beers. We were each able to find a beer we hadn't tried yet. They also had some good whisky's so had to end with an angel's envy!
I went to Commerce Cafe for a late afternoon cup of their wonderful coffee. I also ordered the popovers (when was the last time, if ever, that you've seen popovers on a restaurant menu?) They are wonderful, served with savory butter and shredded gruy
I absolutely loved this place! 5 stars all around. Will did a fabulous job making us feel welcome as well as offering suggestions. Our coffee cups never got less than half-empty. The food was AMAZING! I will be back for sure, and hopefully, it is on
Really good food, the chips and queso was the best Iâve had in a long time. Sourdough buns on the burgers were nice. Careful if you get boneless wings, they basically come out as chicken tenders.
