A step back in time, Berkeley Plantation, with an interesting history of changing ownership over the years. We toured the house with Clarence, a fantastic guide, bright-spirited and very knowledgeable. Beautiful house and grounds. Allow an hour to walk around, another hour for the tour. Eye opening family tree - don’t miss it - in the building with bathrooms where a (dated) film runs. The mansion’s entrance hall was used for dancing in the early days, and how I would love to bring my Colonial dance club there!
We went on a rainy afternoon, not sure what we would find. Found the most informative, animated and engaging guide! He brought history to life and was a wealth of information. If it had been sunny, there would have been more people....GO! AMAZING
We walked through the door, to the moment we left this place was awesome. The lady in the front office was very friendly and helpful and also gave us our tour. She was so sweet and even brought the cat George over to see us.
The grounds are very clean and well kept. The house is magical! The history is inspiring...
There is a monument about taps that will absolutely pull your heart strings.
Will be going back
Beautiful property rich in history. The guided tour was insightful and lasted around thirty minutes. We walked the grounds and went down to the river where the boats would dock to pick up and drop off visitors.
Very much enjoyed our tour there yesterday. Our guide enjoys her work, and it's obvious. She dresses close to period time, (in a very old house, it's a rather broad window)
Even though it's winter, the gardens are very much worthwhile to.still stroll through; their Christmas decorations are extremely well done, and replaced fresh every week. It was a very worthwhile adventure, we're glad we drove the hour to get there.
It was absolutely amazing. I'm really into history so we paid for the tour. I went with my Dad&my 15yr old daughter. Shane was our tour guide&my Dad was beyond impressed. We spent a few hours enjoying the property&walking around. The tour is well worth it.
Nicely restored Georgian Mansion.
Tour guide was very friendly and knowledge.
Very photogenic grounds to wander on the bank of the James
Berkeley Plantation is a wonder experience for those of all ages, especially those interested and invested in our country's history. Berkeley houses many firsts: the first Thanksgiving, the first place whisky was distilled in America, and TAPS was composed on the property. It has been visited by many US presidents, including Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Bush. The movie "Harriet" was filmed here, and the enslaved quarters built for the film have been left on the property to highlight the enslaved peoples who lived on and worked the plantation. Chock-full of history, Berkeley is a great day trip from Richmond or Williamsburg. Plan to stay about 1.5-2 hours, and bring a bottle or two of water.
