I absolutely love pulling over at this place on my way home or on my way to Salem. I enjoy the backside of the baskett Slough more so because the view from back here is a lot better than the main viewpoint that is on the.
Strange to find a semi arid wildlife refuge in Western Oregon, but I liked it. The oak galls are like no others!
Packed gravel path, wide enough to walk as a group, couple of different routes to go. Nice sightseeing from the landing at the top. Great place to get 9 year old dudes energy out 😂
A serene place. Even in summer, when there are fewer birds, the refuge proves itself alive. Herons and egrets wade through shallows, turkey vultures circle above, deer and coyotes wander the golden rolling hills. An old oak forest creaks and sways gently in the wind, the sound of woodpeckers reverberates, bird song cascades down. It is a rare, wonder-filled place. In winter, the refuge transforms itself. Fields once dry and seemingly barren turn bright green and fill with water and life. The sky moves with geese and swans. Their calls echo through the valley. Bald eagles and numerous hawks soar freely across the landscape. You are in another being's home.
An amazing find. Beautiful rolling hills. Oregon White Oak trees. Great trail. Drove about a mile on a good gravel road. Great views and a tranquil walk.
Super cool marshlands however they're very dry this time of year. Very beautiful views
One of the prettiest hikes I've ever been on. Wonderful trails and wildlife at every turn. Even had a few deer cross our path. I will definitely be coming back.
There are two trails at Baskett Slough. One trail, open year round, is a memorial loop in honor of an Oregon conservationist who was a big part of the wildlife refuge and who was tragically killed on flight 93 on 9/11/2001. It's a short loop with a little elevation gain. There is a spur from the loop to a nice viewing platform. We hiked on 4/2, two days after the seasonal trail opened for the season. Most of it is a pretty primitive trail - just mown grass - with the exception of a walk along paved road near the water. Spring rain has made the grassy mown path pretty muddy and wet, so plan ahead with your footwear. The walk back up Mt. Baldy is pretty steep but doesn't take too long, and there's plenty of space to catch your breath along the grassy slope. We saw several people with binoculars and birding guidebooks and heard quite a few birds. The geese still down in the slough were fun to watch and hear. A great hike on a nice day, but plan for mud in spring and that the outer trail down to the slough and Morgan Lake is closed October 1-March 31.
