We camped here for about 4 days and had a wonderful experience! There is a playground for the little ones.... and you're so close to the river and the mountains/rocks/forest regardless of what site you're at. Electric hook up 30amp worked great, and the water fill station next to the camp store worked as well. The bath houses are slightly dated in design but very clean all the time.
This may be our new favorite state park campground. The whole park is extremely clean. All campsites are very nice and well maintained. We loved having a riverfront campsite! You can tell the staff take a lot of pride in the campground and it’s amenities. The camp store is perfect. The bathhouses are extremely clean! We look forward to visiting again in warmer months to take advantage of the awesome swimming holes!
I live in Virginia, not far from the WV border, and have visited and camped at numerous WV State Parks. Audra SP is unique. A small park, it features a picturesque run of the Middle Fork River, where it has several small water falls among the rocks and clear water pools. You can swim in the river and there is a large cement slab "beach" where you can set your lawn chair. The Lower Alum Trail is also a highlight, with a unique boardwalk that snakes under overhanging cliffs. The campground is nice; however I camp with a 24' travel trailer and I would be reluctant to pull it in there. The road back to the park and the campground loop are narrow with very tight turns- not friendly to pulling a trailer. Probably better to use a tent if you want to camp here.
Absolutely beautiful campground! This park may be smaller than other state parks but it has such character and uniqueness. All camp sites have relaxing sounds of the river. A new camp store can get you stocked up on firewood, snacks, and state park merch. Really appreciate that they are open until 9pm especially when arriving after work on Fridays. Bathrooms are very clean. Wonderful campground
We've lived and camped in many places around the world, and this is still one of our most favorite campgrounds and one we try to visit every year. For kids, there's a paved road that loops around the campground that's perfect for riding bikes. The nearby Alum Creek and Cave Trail is beautiful and easily accessible (our 3yos had no problem hiking it). The camp store is well-stocked (ice cream! slushies! coffee!) and there's an on-site playground. There's hot showers, wi-fi, laundry, and even a Little Free Library stand filled with books. And of course, there's the stunning Middle Fork River which is the perfect spot for swimming, fishing, and floating. Not all sites are created equal, and I think your experience may vary depending on the site you get as some sites can be really close together, sharing a drive way, while others are very large and private. I would avoid any of the sites next to the playground if you're at all concerned about noise as it's well-used by the kids camping here. Also, the sites near the cliffs are quite small and hilly - they are nice if you want a rocky outcropping as backdrop, but not great if you have a bigger tent or campervan. The best spots are undoubtedly those right on the river as they tend to be larger and more secluded. This is a beautiful and popular park that gets crowded on weekends with campers and day trippers. We arrived on a Thursday in August and from Thursday to Friday night, it was blissfully empty and quiet. By the time Saturday morning rolled around, the entire campsite was filled and the vibe was noticeably different. I read in the reviews that they strictly enforce only two tents per campsite, but this didn't seem to be the case when we were last there. On one side of us, I swear there were at least 5 tents and just as many cars, some of which blocked communal spots like the water spigot. I was worried that with two large groups on either side of us, we would be in for a lot of noise. On the contrary, and maybe it was due to the sound of the river drowning them out, we barely even heard them during our stay. We talked with one of the ladies working at the park who told us that many people wanted to expand the campground but that they resisted because more spots would mean more people, more trash, more to maintain. While I 100% agree with this, it means that the best camp sites need to be booked well in advance - at minimum 6-8 months out. I don't see this as a huge deal to camp in such a beautiful spot - we used to live in California so we're used to booking 6 months out to the date the moment the booking window opens at 6am in order to get a site at a campground that will sell out in the first 10 minutes of the booking window. Thankfully, this isn't like that. One year, we had to change our plans and didn't have any issue doing so - called the reservation number online, changed the dates, and received a credit that we applied to our next camping trip in the WV state park system. Pretty simple and standard procedure. Also, if you can't get a camp site for the dates you want, it's worth giving the reservations office a call to see if there are any last-minute cancellations. We discovered Audra State Park by accident one fall when we were visiting other sites in the area. By then the campground had long-since closed. We walked through anyway just to take a look and were totally blown away by the beautiful campground and vowed to return the following year. The following year, we returned and the year after that. Year after year we have watched our kids grow older, discover new things, strengthen their bond with nature (and with us), and create new memories in this special part of the world. Until next year, Audra.
Absolutely loved our camping trip here! Wifi is only available by the little store located in the middle of the campground ,and the roads are VERY NARROW, but it was very peaceful! There were lots of access points to the river which was very convenient!
Fishing, hiking, clean bathrooms, plenty of space. Store is stocked and staff is very helpful and kind. We always enjoy our time here.
Love love love this place!! Peace and quiet! Reasonable prices for camping. River is awesome!
