We can not say enough good things about this place. Inside the museum is a wide range of exhibits in a building that has seen remodeling/refreshing in the last several years. The local tourist office is here and very friendly knowledgeable staff. Modern bathrooms very clean. Outside is one the largest railroad equipment we have seen. We took many many photos. The star of the show was a steam locomotive. However getting a photo with clean angles was difficult with all the informational displays around it. There is also a faux/replica covered bridge found on the property.
We visited May 2023.
Excellent history stop in the old depot. Atchison holds a lot of history & it's packed into this place. Great picture ops sitting in the old train engine. Free will donation so anyone can visit! Several other fun quick stops in this town...highly recommend spending a cpl hours if passing through.
This museum is quaint and provides a rather pleasant experience for those that enjoy learning history of the central United States. It also provides an enormous amount of history and fascination for those that crave knowledge about the history of Santa Fe train travel from the 20th century. The person I was touring with found the displays very interesting and exciting; they are a major passenger train fan. It's definitely worth a stop.
Went to the Sallie house and spent the night with West Michigan Paranormal Team. Lots of fun and history in the area. We had a tornado warning siren go off and it was a downpour of rain with thunder that added a complete different feel to the house. Very good time.
I love the historical detail in this museum and the restoration of the old depot to be used by the Chamber of Commerce and the Museum.
Very interesting. No charge, but small donation or more appreciated. Some work/improvements going on inside at this time. Some souvenirs available. Ample parking. Pictures allowed.
Great free museum with lots of history! There are Amelia Earhart exhibits as well as Native American and other local history. You can also check out the real trains outside. It's kid friendly and makes for an easy day trip from KC (less than an hour drive)
Atchison is scenic, historic, and very well maintained; in short, it is a very attractive small town. The museum is located in the old Santa Fe freight depot, and the building also houses the local Chamber of Commerce and travel information center. Everything you need to know about Atchison can be found right here. The museum itself is interesting, but the trolley tour is a MUST. It costs $6, lasts about an hour, and the gentleman who was our guide gave us an absolutely delightful presentation. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring Atchison on our own.

Such a cool piece of history to learn about.
Construction of Amelia Earhart's birthplace and childhood home, located at 223 N. Terrace, initially began in 1861. The wood-frame, Gothic Revival cottage is perched high on the west bank of the scenic Mis
I must say it was a beautiful walk and drive along the Missouri River. I enjoyed the history and beautiful photo ops.

Rustic vibe in this local coffee/cafe. Pastries, baked goods, specialty drinks, beer, wine, BREAKFAST BURRITOS! They kinda have a mix of everything. Cool atmosphere and welcoming spirit here.
I will always be grateful to Jenny on 12/5 who went out of her way to recognize that a blanket in the lost-and-found was the beloved blanket of our son. He's had it since he was a newborn and we didn't even consider that we had left it in the lobby
Another little hidden gem in our little neighboring town of Atchison, KS.
