Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest - Nature preserve in Appomattox - 2581 Purdum Mill Rd, USA

This is where 4-H holds their shooting competitions. The cabins are outdated and beds uncomfortable but you have everything you need. The staff is very friendly and the grounds are nice.

I went to try to hunt with a bow (12/18/2021), since it is only supposed to hunt with arches and black gunpowder; but I could see 5 deer corpses, I don't know if the hunters leave them and take what they need or some disease is killing the deer can (cwd) and the locals walk with dogs herding everywhere difficult to hunt from your tree stand 😏

Beautiful hike around the lake, distance to go all the way around is 6.5 miles. I imagine this place gets really busy during the summer but in February we had it all to ourselves.

Been hunting there my whole life

This is an amazing forest beautiful views and lots of wildlife. It sucks that they timber so much of the hard woods out and replace with pines it removes all the nut bearing trees and deprive animals of food and habitat not much conservation in that. Other than that I look forward to every trip out there

The view from the dam are worth the hike

Beautiful area in central Va. Old growth trees. Crystal clear water and excellent hike. The one down fall was washed out trails and markers not much effort to clearly delineate the way back to original trail.

Walked the Carter-Taylor Trail. The forests are mostly new growth interspersed with logged plots which makes for less attractive scenery. The trails are well-kept, parts are forest service roads. There are some nice streams to cross but be prepared to wade.
