I recommend parking at the top near the restrooms and the trail start sign. The views are much more satisfying going high to low on the loop trail, especially if you are running. Starting at the low end brings you down into the mud first through the campsite and into the ridge valley before going up it. There's plenty of parking. The route is well covered by trees.
A moderate challenge for an inexperienced but somewhat fit hiker. 1000 feet of elevation change on a 5 mile trail. Plenty to see with several overlooks throughout the trail.
Good amount of shade throughout with some seating to take a quick break in 2 spots. It wasn't crowded on a Friday afternoon encountering no more than 10 others on the trail itself.
The trail is pretty safe with some minor obstacles, narrow stretches of trail right next to a high ledge and slippery/muddy spots after it rains. No major concerns if you are cautious.
Be sure to plan for about 2-3 hours to take the trail at a leisurely place.
This is a great place for hiking. The start and end points are both parks, so it's also a great place to enjoy the park. The 4.8-mile course is a moderate length and not too challenging, so it's possible to do it with children. It's not a trail that will show you the stunning views of Hawaii. If you like the feeling of walking in the forest, I highly recommend it. If you want stunning ocean views, there are other trails that are better suited for that.
A great 5 mile hike roundtrip from your car. It's pet and over the age of 5, child friendly. It's an easy hike for Hawaii hikes. It's a great intro hike to adapt to Hawaii hiking. Lots of parking during the week. Go early to get parking on the weekends. There are several lots throughout the park and just before it. Restrooms are available on either end of the trail. Camping is available here as well.
Mostly shaded hike due to trees throughout trail. Hike took approximately 3 hours for the entire loop. Hike was moderately easy, just a bit long.
Great views along the way. Also tons of strawberry guava plants. Munch on a few along the hike.
To start: Drive all the way to the top parking lot/bathroom to begin loop.
End of loop: End will bring you out by middle level parking lot/bathroom. Then walk back up to parking spot.
Wear appropriate hiking shoes in the case it gets muddy. The hike has lots of shade from trees which takes the trail longer to dry after a rain.
We had opportunity to catch a rainbow right at the peak of the hike.
We found several great walking sticks. Placed them at the start of the hike. First come first serve.
Rich in cultural history. You can feel the aura around the Heiau. I use to make the loop hike back in the day but those days are over for me now. Just enjoy sitting under the trees with a cool breeze and watching nature and eating snacks
Nice easy loop trail with a unique view of the highway and some cool plants and birds. We also saw some wild boars when driving up so that was cool. The trail is really easy but at parts will get your blood pumping a little. It's muddy so if it rains it would be harder but you could still get through without trouble I think. I'd recommend hiking shoes and adequate water. it's an easy hike but you also want it to be enjoyable. Restrooms at the start and a good amount of parking. Great hike for the dog.
Great trail. Highly recommended. I would call this trail moderate due to the length and the up and down. Great when dry, but pretty slick after a rain. Trail is well defined and generally wide. The people running on the trail are a little bit of a pain as you continually have to move out of their way. First parking area is for the loop counter-clockwise. Top parking area for start of the clockwise loop. It's quite a ways between the two when you are tired. I would walk to the opposite area of your car to start, while you're fresh, to start the trail to end at your car. Walking from the bottom up the hill to the top lot is a pain at the end. 2 hours to complete at a moderate pace.
